9:42 p.m. - Keystone Oaks leads Ambridge, 23-20.

Montour has defeated Char Valley, 49-14

9:40 p.m. - Late in the game and Woodland Hills leads, 31-7. Woody High just attempted 41-yard field goal. No good.

9:32 p.m. - Rushel Shell just had a 75-yard run. So it looks like he'll get his 100 yards for the 30th consecutive game.

9:29 p.m. - From Ricci Rich: Fourth quarter and Mars leads Moon, 13-8.

9:24 p.m. - End of the third quarter and Upper St. Clair leads Shaler, 42-0.

9:18 p.m. - Montour leading Char Valley, 49-14. Julian Durden 229 yards rushing for Montour.

Moon ahead, 7-6.

Seton-LaSalle beat Carrick, 49-7.

9:16 p.m. - Second-teamer time here. TJ scores on freshman Austin Kemp's 16-yard TD run. PAT makes it 31-7 with five seconds left in the third.

9:13 p.m. - North Catholic took 6-0 lead on Bobby Tacey 15 yd. INT return. But Springdale went ahead on Sean Dugan 2-yard run and PAT 7-6 late in third.

Hopewell and Belle Vernon now tied, 7-7.

8:58 p.m. - Maybe Woody High coach George Novak is trying to keep score down, but I certainly don't understand this one. 37 yard field goal by Sam Scifo. ON FIRST DOWN !!!!!!!!!!

Yes, first down. If you're trying to keep the score down, take a knee. I'll ask George after. I'm sure he has an explanation. Maybe wanted to practice field-goal kicking.

8:46 p.m. - Keystone Oaks leading Ambridge, 17-14, at halftime.

8:45 p.m. - Players starting to cramp up. Sure it's happening everywhere.

8:42 p.m. - More bad news for Thomas Jefferson. Fumbled away opening kickoff of second half. Two plays later, Patrick Menifee to Jason Peterson for 23-yard TD pass. Now 28-0 with 11:20 left in the third. Maybe mercy rule soon?

8:41 p.m. - North Hills now leads Perry, 21-7. Perry scored on long TD.

8:38 p.m. - USC now leads Shaler, 35-0, with two minutes still left in half. That means mercy rule for second half.

8:33 p.m. - Belle Vernon and Hopewell are scoreless at half.

8:29 p.m. - GRos reports Rushel Shell is really being bottled up against Belle Vernon. He estimates maybe only 15 yards at halftime.

8:25 p.m. - North Allegheny leading State College, 28-14, at half.

8:25 p.m. - North Catholic and Springdale scoreless at half.

8:22 p.m. - Upper St. Clair ahead, 28-0. Remember, Shaler QB Mincher out with apparent knee injury.

8:20 p.m. - Upper St. Clair has gone ahead of Shaler, 21-0. USC outgaining Shaler, 21-8.

8:18 p.m. - FROM ONE OF THE FAMOUS PANUCHES: Montour clubbing Chartiers Valley, 35-7. Julian Durden three TDs.

8:16 p.m. - FIRST-HALF STATS

Thomas Jefferson can forget the run. Minus 10 yards rushing in first half. Woodland Hills had 139. Jaimire Dutrieuille 42 yards for Woody High on 12 carries. Patrick Menifee 65 on 6 attempts.

TJ top rusher Ryan Ruffing had minus-9 yards on six attempts.

8:08 p.m. - Upper St. Clair has gone ahead of Shaler, 14-0. Dakota Conwell 27-yard TD pass to Mike Wilcox. Big news in this one. Shaler QB Ryan Mincher knocked out of game with apparent knee injury. This from colleage Sargeant Brad Everett.

8:02 p.m. - 3:03 left in the half and WHills kicker Sam Scifo just missed 44-yard field goal.

8:00 p.m. - From No. 3 Dan The Man - North Hills leads Perry, 7-0, after the first

7:52 p.m. - From colleague Chris Adamski. Springdale and North Catholic are scoreless after the first quarter.

7:49 - Turnover into a TD for Woodland Hills. On first down at the 13, TJ's Ryan Ruffing couldn't get handoff, fumbled it, the ball got tipped and rolled into the end zone. Jaimire Dutrieuille fell on it. Sam Scifo kick and this one is turning into a blowout. 21-0 Woodland Hills, 8:35 in half.

7:43 p.m. - Great goal-line stand by TJ prevents another TD. First-and-goal from the 5, Woodland Hills doesn't score. Ryan Ruffing stops Jamire Dutrieuille on fourth down from the 1 for a 2-yard loss.

7:41 p.m. - Big Brad Everett reports Niko Thorpe starting at RB for Shaler, son of former Fox Chapel star Chris Thorpe.

7:40 p.m. From G Man Goga, Steel Valley all over Albert Gallatin, 20-0, in first quarter.

7:37 p.m. From Duke Holzer. Upper St. Clair leads Shaler, 7-0, on blocked punt.

From G Ros, Hopewell and Belle Vernon scoreless after first. Shell might have 10 yards, G Ros says. Belle Vernon crowding the line.

7:35 p.m. - State College has tied North Allegheny, 7-7.

7:34 p.m. - End of the first and it's 14-0 Woodland Hills

7:33 p.m. - Jump ball TD pass to 6-5 Shakim Alonzo, caught over 5-11 Ryan Ruffing. PAT good by Scifo and Woodland Hills leads, 14-0.

7:23 p.m. - After 4-yard punt by TJ (yes, I said 4 yards), Wood. Hills takes over at TJ 27. Looks of things, Wood. Hills a little too fast for TJ.

7:21 p.m. - No huddle by TJ.

7:17 p.m. - From Tom Ficcari: North Allegheny scored on its first play, long TD pass from Mack Leftwich to Brendan Coniker against State College.

7:15 p.m. - Woodland Hills drives 67 yards in nine plays for TD. Jaimire Dutrieuille scores on 2-yard run. Big play was fake punt that Pat Menifee turned into 20-yard gain. Menifee also is Woodland Hills' QB. Not sure if he is punter, but it sure looked fishy when he went back to punt.

7:13 p.m. - Woody High driving on first possession at TJ 2-yard line. Fake punt went for 20 yards.

7:06 p.m. - What's up with this? One of the officials is Mark Cherpak. That's the brother of TJ coach Bill Cherpak. I kid you not. I'm just sayin'

7:03 p.m. - Steeler Ryan Mundy (Woodland Hills grad) honorary captain.

6:57 p.m. - Unless this is a late-arriving crowd, it's not a very big crowd. Then again, I've seen many openers over the years that don't draw very well.

6:55 p.m. - About 100degrees in press box here. Craig Wolfley just walked in - color commentator for Root Sports. In long-sleeve shirt and tie. When he came in, just before he sat down he announced "Hey boys, just warning ya that it's so hot in here I'll probably be down to my boxers by halftime."

Good one.

6:49 p.m. - Kickoff is set for 7:05. No band uniforms for Woody Hihg band. Just shorts and T-shirts. Too hot. Don't blame them.

6:19 p.m. - Woodland Hills receiver Shakim Alonzo. Passes the eyeball test. 6-5, 205 has offers from Pitt and other D-1 schools.

6:17 p.m. - Interesting to seeWoodland Hills, which lost a lot of key players from last year. But this team always has some skill. Thomas Jefferson has good running back in Ryan Ruffing. How is the line, though?

6:13 p.m. It all begins again tonight. First night of the football season in Pennsylvania. Above, Woodland Hills goes through pregame warmups.

Lots of big shots here. Ryan Mundy of the Steelers. Root Sports crew Rob King, Craig Wolfley and Dan Potash (by the way, you should see Rob King hit a golf ball. Big hitter). How you think those guys feel in suits and ties in this heat?

Lanny Frattare in the press box doing play-by-play with Bob Orkwis for The Fan 93.7 and MSA Sports. Lanny gets to wear shorts and a golf shirt. Then again, so do I.

I'll get into it more when I hear the Woodland Hills band come out. Nothing quite like hearing the band on the first night of the season. At a high school game. Or college game.

Oh yeah. Kenny "The Horse" Mrazik here from PG for a while. Makes things go Friday night in headquarters at Post-Gazette.

Deuce Skurcenski here, too.

Below, TJ warmup.
