Hopewell running back Rushel Shell is close to 5,000 yards rushing for his career.
Shell, only a junior, needs only 61 yards to move into 12th place on the WPIAL all-time list, and 268 yards to reach 5,000 for his career. Directly in front of him is Mapletown's Derek Bochna, who had 4,793 yards before graduating in 1990.
After Bochna, here are the next five players in front of Shell:
Marcus Furman, Connellsville (5,041 yards)
Jason Murray, Belle Vernon (5,046)
Keith Miller, Beth-Center (5,121)
Todd Harris, Duquesne (5,224)
Max Suter, Greensburg Central Catholic (5,252)
The WPIAL record is 7,646 yards by Mike Vernillo, who graduated from Fort Cherry in 2000.
If you want to see some of Shell's highlights against Montour last week (he had 318 yards rushing), check them out from the Post-Gazette's Andrew Rush. Shell must be a tough succer. Go to about the 2:30 mark of the highlights and you'll see Shell looking like Y.A. Tittle, with blood streaming down the side of his face. He received a cut in warmups, but played the game.
