Football notes ... it begins tomorrow

Written by Mike White on .

A note about future Varsity Blogs: We'll be "going camping" tomorrow. High school football practice in Pennsylvania begins officially tomorrow, and I'll be at at least two different high school football camps for the first three or four days this week, giving you some insight on the top teams, top players and anything else noteworthy - whether it's serious or humorous. First stops tomorrow: Montour and Chartiers Valley.

Son of Ickey Woods dies

A sad story from the Cincinnati area. The son of former NFL running back Ickey Woods died from complications of an asthma attack. Elbert Jovante Woods was 16 and a member of the Princeton High School football team in Cincinnati.

USA Today has a story on Woods' death.

Birds force game changes

We sometimes have to deal with thunderstorms on Friday nights early in the high school football season. And then it's cold or even snow late in the season. In Hawaii, the problem is birds on Friday nights.

According to an Associated Press story, some games on Hawaii's Kauai Island will be held on Saturday afternoons instead of Friday nights this year in order to protect threatened seabirds.

The bright lights used during the night games confuse newborn Newell’s shearwaters, which rely on moonlight to travel from their nests out to sea. Every year, an estimated 30 shearwaters become disoriented and fall from the skies because of the lights at Vidinha Stadium.

The first two games of the season won’t be moved because they fall before the fledgling season begins on Sept. 15.

Under federal and state laws, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation can be fined up to $30,000 for each bird that dies. The federation decided to move the games.
