Caputo down to two?

Written by Mike White on .

I'm just sayin'

West Allegheny football player Mike Caputo might make a college decision in the next few weeks. He has said his finalists are Pitt, Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State.

Look for the choice to be either Wisconsin or Ohio State.

Unless something drastically changes, it won't be Pitt or Penn State. I've heard at least one of the schools, or maybe both, backed off Caputo. He also might not be all that interested in them. Or maybe it's a combination of both. Whatever the reason, don't look for Caputo to choose either school in his home state.

I know Caputo likes Wisconsin. There is even a West Allegheny tie at Wisconsin. Former West Allegheny player Ben Herbert is the strength and conditioning coach for the Badgers. He also is a former Wisconsin player.

Caputo is a running back-defensive back for West Allegheny. He has been recruited by most colleges to play defense.

Rally at Wolvarena schedule set

Four WPIAL teams will play four teams from out of state on the first Saturday (Sept. 4) of the season. The event is being called the Rally At The Wolvarena, in reference to Woodland Hills' home stadium.

The schedule for the event has been set. At 11 a.m., McKeesport plays Steubenville, Ohio. At 2 p.m., Central Catholic plays Akron Buchtel (Ohio). At 5 p.m., Thomas Jefferson takes on Cocoa, Fla. At 8 p.m, Woodland Hills plays Manatee, Fla.

You'll be hearing more information about the event in the next month. But tickets are $18 the day of the event and one ticket is good for all four games. Pre-sale tickets will be discounted at a cost to be determined.

The event is being run by Ken Halloy, president of Halloy Boy Sports Marketing in New Albany, Ohio. Halloy has staged similar events in other states.

Schmidt to Cincinnati

The WPIAL usually has about 20 baseball players sign with Division I colleges each year. North Hills outfielder Taylor Schmidt, who will be a senior, has made a verbal commitment to the University of Cincinnati. Schmidt also is North Hills' quarterback and was an all-section pick in baseball.
