One Latrobe golfer got to celebrate a WPIAL championship two weeks ago.

Today, the entire Latrobe team was in on a championship celebration

The Latrobe boys' golf team won the WPIAL Division I team golf championship at Cedarbrook Golf Club in Belle Vernon with a score of 397. Fox Chapel was second at 404, Central Catholic third at 411, defending champ Peters Township fourth at 412, Bethel Park fifth at 415 and Penn-Trafford sixth at 423. Latrobe's Ben Gjebre was the WPIAL individual champ two weeks ago and was medalist today with a score of 73.

Stork delivers

Bishop Canevin won the WPIAL Division II boys' team title for the first time in school history today with a score of 412 at Cedarbrook. Three-time defending champ Sewickley Academy was second at 414, Neshannock third at 415, South Fayette fourth at 436, California fifth at 442 and Seton-LaSalle sixth at 456.

Now, in the newspaper, we can't go around quoting Bishop Canevin coach Randy "Stork" Stoernell because he works in the sports department as a copy editor. You know, he reads stories and fixes mistakes made by the knucklehead writers. But it just doesn't look good when you quote your co-workers in the newspaper. But Varsity Blog can be a little more on the light-hearted side. We're not going to quote Stork here, but we're going to say congratulations to "Stork," a guy who used to think he was Mayor of Mount Washington. And thankfully Bishop Canevin's players' swings are a lot better than their coach's.

Girls' championship

Lastly, the Shady Side Academy girls won the WPIAL team title for the second year in a row with a score of 345 today at Cedarbook. Fox Chapel was second (347), Center third (368), Upper St. Clair fourth (376), Penn-Trafford fifth (383), Bethel Park sixth (406), Butler seventh (410) and Mount Pleasant eighth (418).
