Live blog. I am at command central (White House) but am getting reports from PIAA semifinal games involving WPIAL teams.
8:59 p.m. - FINAL SCORE FROM CLASS A GIRLS: Bishop Guilfoyle 58, Vincentian 45 - WPIAL champs defeated by defending PIAA champ.
8:57 p.m. - FINAL SCORE FROM GIRLS CLASS AAA: Indiana 54, Chartiers Valley 52 - Chartiers Valley girls won't be joining the boys at Penn State. Leslie Stapleton had 19 for Indiana and Aubree Frye 10. For Chartiers Valley, Paige Aleski had 16 and Erica Restich 14.
8:39 p.m. - Final stat from Reggie Sanserino, who is covering the South Fayette-Mercyhurst Prep game for PG: Mike Lamberti 25 points for South Fayette.
8:33 p.m. - Final stats from Plymouth-Whitemarsh-North Allegheny - Junior Jaylen Bond was terrific with 26 points and 12 rebounds. He was 12 of 13 from the field. C.J. Aiken, 6-11 St. Joseph's recruit, 12 points and 7 rebounds.
For North Allegheny, sophomore Anthony Dallier with 18 and Jack Counahan 12.
Key to the game? Points in the paint. Thanks to North Allegheny's tremendous stat man, Steve Heckmann, here is the key stat: Plymouth-Whitemarsh had 50 points in the pain and North Allegheny 16.
North Allegheny actually does its stats on a computer, like a college, with Heckmann guiding the way.
8:29 p.m. - FINAL SCORE: PLYMOUTH-WHITEMARSH 71, NORTH ALLEGHENY 47
Not all that surprised. Most teams from District 1 (Philadelphia area) are just too strong for most of the WPIAL AAAA teams. But great run by North Allegheny in the PIAA.
Third year in a row a WPIAL team gets belted by District 1 team in the semifinals. Two years ago, Norristown beat Moon, 52-33. Last year, Penn Wood beat Mt. Lebanon, 79-58.
8:21 p.m. - Tara Stossel hits a big 3-pointer and Indiana leads Chartiers Valley, 50-44, with 2:24 left.
8:18 p.m. - North Allegheny had cut lead to 11, but it's now back to 17. Plymouth-Whitemarsh leads, 58-41.
8:17 p.m. - FINAL SCORE: SOUTH FAYETTE 54, MERCYHURST PREP 41. - The best season in South Fayette history just got a little better.
8:15 p.m. - South Fayette rolling, leading, 54-41. Strong second half for Lions.
8:11 p.m. - South Fayette looks like it's on to PSU!!!! Lions lead, 48-41, less than a minute left. Mercyhurst Prep 6-7 senior Josh Chojnacki has fouled out. 16 points and 13 rebounds.
8:10 p.m. - Indiana girls score first five points of fourth and lead, 44-37.
8:09 p.m. - Plymouth-Whitemarsh has opened up a 47-29 lead with 6:03 left. Jaylen Bond too much for NA. Has 20 through three quarters.
8:06 p.m. - Little less than two minutes left and South Fayette leads 46-39.
8:05 p.m. - Chartiers Valley girls making a comeback. An 11-2 third-quarter run and Char Valley has cut Indiana's lead to 39-37 after three quarters. Erica Restich had seven points in the run.
8:04 p.m. - End of third quarter and Plymouth-Whitemarsh leads, 44-29.
8:03 p.m. - I'd say it will be P-Whitemarsh and Penn Wood in championship. They've already played this year.
8:03 p.m. - Thought this might happen. Plymouth-Whitemarsh pulling away. Now lead North Allegheny, 44-27, late in the third.
8:00 p.m. - A little more than three minutes left and South Fayette leads Mercyhurst Prep, 42-34.
8:00 p.m. - Bond again and it's 40-27 Plymouth-Whitemarsh.
7:58 p.m. - Jaylen Bond eight points in the quarter for Plymouth-Whitemarsh. North Allegheny in trouble. Plymouth-Whitemarsh has opened a 36-24 lead.
7:54 p.m. - South Fayette leads 42-32.
7:52 p.m. - Oh-oh. Plymouth-Whitemarsh on a run. 8-0 so far in the third quarter and P-W now leads, 32-22, with 4:45 left in the third.
7:50 p.m. - Plymouth-Whitemarsh leads, 28-22, early in the third quarter.
7:49 p.m. - End of third quarter, South Fayette has taken a 40-29 lead after three quarters. Nice job by Lions. Looking good for first trip to state finals. Mike Lamberti seven points in the third quarter.
7:47 p.m. - Lamberti scores late in third quarter. South Fayette leads, 36-29. We could have our third WPIAL team headed to Penn State.
From Reggie Sanserino: South Fayette's Mike Lamberti has five points in third quarter so far. A 3-pointer for South Fayette and Lions now lead over Mercyhurst Prep, 30-25.
HALFTIME GIRLS' SCORE: Indiana 31, Chartiers Valley 25 - Leslie Stapleton has 12 points for Indiana, which has not trailed. Erica Restich 7 for Char Valley.
7:39 p.m. - First-half stats from NA-P-Whitemarsh: Anthony Dallier 10 points for NA. Jaylen Bond has eight for Plymouth-Whitemarsh and 6-10 St. Joseph's recruit C.J. Aiken only four. P-W leads in rebounds, 15-12, with 8 offensive rebounds.
HALFTIME: MERCYHURST PREP 23, SOUTH FAYETTE 20 - South Fayette was 0 for 10 from 3-point range in the first half. Mike Lamberti eight points for South Fayette. 6-7 Josh Chojnacki eight for Mercyhurst Prep.
7:35 p.m. - Halftime score: Plymouth-Whitemarsh 24, North Allegheny 22. Just hang in until the fourth quarter, NA.
7:28 p.m. - Jack Counahan's first 3-pointer. NA within three, 22-19.
7:27 p.m. - Timeout. Plymouth-Whitemarsh leads, 22-16.
7:25 p.m. - Plymouth-Whitemarsh is from the Phila. area. Although Colonials are good, I'm going to guess not as good as Philadelphia Neumann-Goretti, who will play Chartiers Valley in the AAA championship Friday.
7:24 p.m. - Tip-in by Anthony Dallier and North Allegheny trails, 19-16.
7:23 p.m. - Plymouth-Whitemarsh has a starter named Whis Grant. Seriously, he's listed as Whis.
7:21 p.m. - Sargeant Everett reports Indiana girls lead Chartiers Valley, 17-12, after first quarter. Leslie Stapleton has nine of Ind. 17 points. "You'd think this was an Indiana home game," Sargeant says of the many Indiana fans at Plum.
7:20 p.m. - End of first quarter and Plymouth-Whitemarsh scored last nine points of quarter to take a 14-8 lead. Anthony Dallier has all eight North Allegheny points.
7:17 p.m. - From Post-Gazette colleague Sargeant Everett. He says a large number of student fans at Indiana-Chartiers Valley girls' game. Impressive. Students are wearing cowboy hats.
7:16 p.m. - Plymouth-Whitemarsh ahead, 9-8.
From colleague Mike "Reggie" Sanserino, who is at Class AA semifinal. Mercyhurst Prep leads South Fayette, 14-8, after first quarter.
7:14 p.m. - I really Anthony Dallier's game. Only a sophomore, he's long at 6 feet 4. Can shoot from the outside and can also put it on the floor some. If he gets to maybe 6-6 in the next few years, could be a Division I guy. Could be.
7:13 p.m. - OK. North Allegheny has it going. Anthony Dallier hits two 3-pointers to give NA 8-5 lead. It's now 8-7.
7:08 p.m. - Not a good start for North Allegheny against Plymouth-Whitemarsh in the Class AAAA boys' game. More than three minutes into the game and North Allegheny trails Plymouth-Whitemarsh, 5-0.
Nothing against North Allegheny. Good team. Good coach. But the Tigers' chances of winning aren't great. Plymouth-Whitemarsh is good. But if NA can shoot well, and not turn the ball over, the Tigers can maybe stay in the game.
