AP poll is out

Written by Paul Zeise on .

The Associated Press released its preseason poll this morning and all three local teams are ranked. West Virginia, the preseason favorite in the Big East, is No. 8. Penn State is No. 22 and Pitt is No. 25. It is the Panthers' first preseason ranking since 2003.

Not a whole lot of surprises. Georgia, the No. 1 team in just about every poll I've seen, is atop the rankings. Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma and Florida round out the top five. Check out some of the teams that are in the top 10 or pushing to get in the top 10. Missouri is No. 6, Clemson is No. 9, Texas Tech is No. 12 and Kansas No. 14. Missouri and kansas are looking to establish that they were not flukes last season and Clemson and Texas Tech, two teams that rarely are ranked among the nation's elite, have new expectations.

The only surprise I see is South Florida being ranked No. 19. I think Pitt will be the second-best team in the Big East this season and I have the Panthers at No. 25. Here is my preseason top 25:

1. Georgia
2. USC
3. Ohio State
4. Missouri
5. Florida
6. Oklahoma
7. LSU
8. Auburn
9. West Virginia
10. Texas
11. Kansas
12. Wisconsin
13. Illinois
14. Clemson
15. Arizona State
16. Virginia Tech
17. Penn State
18. Tennessee
19. Texas Tech
20. Wake Forest
21. BYU
22. Oregon
23. South Carolina
24. Boise State
25. Pitt

I'll be blogging each week about the rankings, usually on Sunday mornings, so check back every week for analysis and explanations on where I rank teams.
