Halfway home - WVU 28, Kentucky 26 - 30 minutes from the Final Four

Written by Paul Zeise on .

As expected this is an ugly game marred with a lot of physical play, bad offense and poor shooting -- with two exceptions:

The reason West Virginia is winning is they are 8-for-15 from the 3-point line, which has to be some sort of a sign that maybe it is the Mountaineers night because they never shoot it that well. A big thing though that goes with that stat -- they are 0-for-16 in two-point shots, and that includes a number of bunnies that Devin Ebanks - who is one of the worst finishers I have ever seen -- has missed.

Also, the teams are a combined 10-for-12 from the free throw line, which is also uncharacteristic of either team so we will see if that continues.

A big problem Kentucky is having in the final few minutes of the half is controlling their emotions - DeAndre Liggins got a technical foul and the refs then warned John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins to cool it and shut up or they would be sent packing early.

If the game remains this competitive and this hard-fought and everything else, it will be interesting to see if the Wildcats inexperience shows up in a bad way in the second half.

That being said, although there are a lot of Kentucky fans here, this place sounds an awful lot like the WVU Coliseum as there are clearly more Mountaineers fans here and they are louder and more into the game than the Kentucky fans.

I do have a question for Pitt fans, however -- who are you rooting for in this one?

West Virginia is a fellow Big East team and the last one standing but they are also your bitter rivals and watching them celebrate a Final Four would have to irritate you at least a little bit but they are going against Coach Calipari, who many Pitt fans think represents everything that is wrong with college basketball. Just a question.
