Signing day is technically already here but I think the first faxes aren't able to come in until 7 AM.
Here are the six players -- in addition to the 16 players already committed to the Panthers -- that Pitt's coaches are hoping to get faxes from (along with Pitt's chances of getting them as far as I can tell). These six really will make a huge difference in the class in terms of where it ranks:
** LaFayette Pitts (CB, Woodland Hills, 5-11, 185) – Pitts originally committed to Pitt, then decommitted from the Panthers when Dave Wannstedt was fired and committed to Rutgers. However, Pitts’ cousin and teammate, Jevonte Pitts, committed to the Panthers over the weekend and now Pitts and his family are again strongly considering the Panthers. I would say that it is really a coin flip with Pitts. According to some people around him, he prefers Rutgers but his family would like him to go to Pitt. But again, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
** Delvon Simmons (DT, McKeesport, 6-5, 265) – Pitt is in the running but the Panthers do not seem to be among his top two or three. It appears to be down to North Carolina, Oregon and USC. But here is the interesting thing about Simmons - nobody around him seems to know or even have a reasonably educated guess about what he is going to do so I have no way to handicap Pitt's chances other than to say it does not seem likely that he will be signing with the Panthers. But, nobody really knows so we will all wait and see.
** Ejuan Price (LB, Woodland Hills, 6-0, 235) – He already committed to Ohio State, but the Panthers have made a late run at him and he is said to be reconsidering his choice. We should know pretty early about him because the Woodland Hills kids are meeting for a breakfast at 8 AM and then officially signing at 9.
** Branden Jackson (DE, McKeesport, 6-4, 220) – Simmons teammate and another player with plenty of offers. The Panthers seem to be in a battle with Texas Tech and Oregon for his services but Mike White talked to a number of people around him tonight at the North Hills-McKeesport basketball game and it appears as if the Panthers are leading the way here.
** Desimon Green (DE, Clairton, 6-5, 230) – Another player, like Pitts, who originally committed to Pitt but decommitted because of the coaching change. I've always maintained that he will end up at Pitt but the Panthers are in a battle with Texas Tech for him. I still think he'll sign with the Panthers and they get him, Jackson and one or two others on this list, that would be a very strong close to what has already been an impressive recruiting season for a coaching staff that hasn't been in place even a month yet.
** Michael Eubank (QB, Centennial high school, Corona, Calif., 6-5, 232) – Eubank, a dual-threat quarterback, is already committed to Arizona State but visited Pitt this past weekend and is at least considering Pitt because of Graham’s offensive system. Eubank, from what I can gather, seems like a bit of a longshot, but if the Panthers can pull this off and grab him, I'm not sure how anyone could really complain about this recruiting class, given how late the staff got started in this thing.
I'll try and update this blog throughout the day as things develop and then, of course, there is the 3:30 news conference at Heinz Field to announce the class as well.
