It sure sounds that way at this point.
Obviously for those of you who went to sleep - there was an internet report late last night by Eastern recruiting guru Bob Lichtenfels that his MAC sources were telling him that Miami (Ohio) coach Michael Haywood was in Pittsburgh yesterday interviewing with Steve Pederson and was likely going to get offered the job today.
At the late hour it was too hard to get someone on the phone to confirm or deny it but at this point in the morning, this is what I can say - there sure seems to be a heckuva lot of fire burning around that smoke!!
Officially the job has not been offered to Haywood - officially - but he is in Pittsburgh and from everything I can tell based on who I have talked to this morning, he is the first candidate that has actually been brought to campus and it is likely he is now fully in the crosshairs of this thing.
So stay tuned, you, meaning Pitt fans, could have a coach in place shortly.
Again, and let me stress this - although it sure seems that Haywood is going to be the guy at this point, as we've seen over the years - and let me say it again, this is the sixth time I've been involved in covering a major coaching search and there are always twists, turns and sometimes last minute snags -- nothing is over until all of the papers are signed.
I would think we will know something more official today because Miami is set to begin practicing for its bowl game tomorrow. Haywood was the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis before taking over at Miami in 2009. He was 1-11 his first season and 9-4 this season and the Redhawks won the MAC.
