A Few Quick Notes

Written by Paul Zeise on .

Hey here are a few quick notes then I'll have more after I finish my stories:

** As I stated before the game three players did not make the trip and are officially suspended indefinitely from the team for various indiscretions and basic general immaturity. The three players are defensive linemen Bernardo Nunez, linebacker Kevin Adams and tailback T.J. Peeler. Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt said after the game that all three will not be participating with the team until they take care of some things academically and prove they deserve the chance to play college football again. In the case of Adams, it is a shame because it very well could have been him, and not Shane Gordon, who got the start today had he not made some unwise decisions in recent weeks. Again, not that big of a deal because none of the three figured big into any plans this year but this is not a good thing at this point in the season.

** As expected Gordon started at linebacker, Dom DeCicco started at safety and Brock DeCicco started at tight end. Wannstedt said after the game the decision to start Shane Gordon and Brock DeCicco was based on performance but noted that Greg Williams played more than Gordon at linebacker and Cruz played more of the snaps at tight end - though DeCicco got his first career touchdown.

** One thing coaches were able to hold off on was playing Bryan Murphy. Wannstedt said the plan was to play him because they didn't think Brandon Lindsey's shoulder would hold up for an entire game. But Lindsey was able to hang in there long enough to get the game out of reach and then coaches made the decision to keep Murphy's redshirt intact - for now. Wannstedt said that Murphy could very well play next week but the hope is that they can survive without him until Greg Romeus comes back. Lindsey's health, however, will help decide what happens with Murphy because if he can continue to hang in there and play a lot of snaps, coaches will do what they can do to keep Murphy redshirtted.

** This was sort of the redemption tour game as a lot of guys who have been criticized for their play of late really played extremely well - Tino Sunseri put the "quarterback" discussion to bed with his performance today, Cam Saddler had a good day returning punts, Tristan Roberts and Greg Williams both played extremely well --- and the game ball was awarded to Ricky Gary.
