Holgorsen on Texas: "We obviously have our work cut out for us."

Written by Jenn Menendez on .

Dana Holgorsen and his 4-0 team will head southwest to Texas later this week for the team’s biggest test of the season.

Holgorsen met with the medai this afternoon and opened with some thoughts on how this challenge stacks up.

The short of it? It stacks up high. Texas high.

The Texas offense

Holgorsen: “Offensively, they’re still young, nine returning starters, but they’re still young. We have nine returning starters but eight of them are seniors….They do a great job of taking care of the ball. They do a great job staying ahead of the chains. They are in the top five as far as third-down production. They have running backs in the backfield that are very athletic. They’ve got weapons on the outside.”

The Texas defense (ranked No. 63)

Holgorsen: “Defensively they’re tremendous against the pass. Obviously we’re going to throw the ball around a little bit. (They have) great pass rushers, and tremendous speed in the secondary. They do a great job of covering the pass.

“They’re a little nicked up at linebacker, but as always, we expect their guys to be back and play at a very high level. We will have our hands full with them defensively."

Texas special teams

“They’ve probably blocked as many kicks as anyone in the country in last 13 years. They are in the top 15 when it comes to punt return and kick return. On all three sides of the ball it’s going to be a chore. You couple that with being on the road for the first time this year…playing in somebody else’s stadium? We obviously have our work cut out for us.”
