Ticket sales slow for WVU, James Madison

Written by Jenn Menendez on .

Ticket sales have not exactly been brisk for West Virginia’s game against James Madison on Saturday at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

According to Matt Wells, the program’s assistant athletic director for marketing and sales, about 20,000 or so West Virginia fans should be inside the stadium on Saturday.

West Virginia has sold 9,600 tickets, said Wells, and will use another 900 for the band and players families.

James Madison has sold another 7,000, and the Washington Redskins are attempting to sell tickets as well.

FedEx Field has a capacity of 85,000.

Unless there is a massive walk-up, at this rate it sounds like there will be thousands and thousands of empty seats.

Wells said he does not have a total number at this point, but there was an expectation it would be a difficult sell.

"Obviously it’s a little bit of a different animal in terms of a neutral site game against an FCS opponent," said Wells. "We knew it was going to be tough to sell it out."

There appear to be plenty of places to get tickets still:

*Groupon is getting in on the action.

Tickets are currently going for 38 percent off on the popular daily deal website that peddles everything from watches to Jamacian vacations.

*Ticketmaster appears to have plenty.

*And on StubHub tickets are going for as little as $24.95.
