Five QBs are better than two
West Virginia has five quarterbacks on the roster this preseason – a far cry from a year ago when Coach Dana Holgorsen and assistants Shannon Dawson and Jake Spavital stepped in for reps during camp.
“I think it saves some of the relief from our arms,” said QB Geno Smith. “Sometimes I would run the scout team because we didn’t have many QBs and guys couldn’t run the scout team.
“I think I had some wear and tear on my body. I’m taking my normal reps (this preseason), working hard as usual but it’s good to have those guys out and have them in our meeting room.”
Holgorsen said a lot of his drills require five quarterbacks, so the luxury of having all five arms is an important one.
“It alleviates some of the every-down throwing that Geno and Paul do,” he said. “Long term, it should really help us because we can get better from a drill standpoint and not wear out Geno’s and Paul’s arm.”
The depth chart:
- Geno Smith, Sr.
- Paul Millard, So.
- Ford Childress, Fr.
- Followed by walk-ons (in no particular order) Travis Mareney of Morgantown and Logan Moore a Fairmont State transfer who is a junior.
