DeForest: associate head coach/co-DC

Written by Jenn Menendez on .

Joe DeForest will be West Virginia’s associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator, roles that will earn him $500,000 a year, according to an offer letter by AD Oliver Luck made public through a freedom of information act request by

The agreement is signed by both Luck and DeForest.

It’s still unclear what Mike Smith’s exact title and role will be. He was officially hired with the same caveat that his title/role would be shared when Dana Holgorsen completes his staff.

But it certainly makes perfect sense that DeForest - who spent the last 11 years at Oklahoma State - would not be leaving for a role less than something like this.

DeForest’s contract is for three years, running through Jan. 30, 2015.

As for the talk that a Big 12 schedule will be released on Feb. 1?

It could happen obviously, but I wouldn’t bet the house on it.

Just touched base with Bob Burda in the Big 12 office who said the league’s TV partners do specify a Feb. 1 football schedule release.

But because of the situation with West Virginia it is “yet to be determined if our TV partners
will hold to a Feb. 1 deadline.”
