Twenty Years Later - Capitals 6, Penguins 4 - 11-27-12

"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 6-4 loss against the Washington Capitals, Nov. 27, 1992.


The Penguins lost their second consecutive game at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md. Left winger Kevin Stevens gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead with a goal against goaltender Jim Hrivnak 10:44 into the contest. Assists went to right winger Rick Tocchet and former Capitals defenseman Larry Murphy.

Washington tied the game, 1-1, just over a minute later at 11:56 when right winger Pat Elynuik scored against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Defenseman Al Iafrate and center Dale Hunter collected assists.

A power-play goal by Tocchet at 15:41 gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Assists went to center Ron Francis and Murphy.

The Penguins took a 3-1 lead when center Mario Lemieux scored just 43 seconds into the second period. Stevens recorded the lone assist.

At the 5:49 mark, Iafrate scored on another power play to make it a 3-2 contest. Hrivnak collected the only assist.

Just under three minutes later at 8:47, Washington tied the game, 3-3, with an unassisted goal by Bob Carpenter.

Washington took a 4-3 lead when left winger Todd Krygier scored the go-ahead goal at the 11:40 mark off assists from Elynuik and left winger Dmitri Khristich.

Iafrate scored the eventual game-winning goal at 9:39 of the third period. Assists went to Elynuik and defenseman Sylvain Cote.

Stevens scored his second goal of the game to make it 5-4 at 14:18. Assists went to Tocchet and Lemieux.

Late in the game at 19:40, center Mike Ridley scored an empty-net goa to secure the win. the only assist went to left winger Kelly Miller.

Notes:

-Barrasso made 32 saves in the loss.

-The three stars were: 1.) Iafrate 2.) Elynuik 3.) Stevens.
