Today, we look at the Penguins' 5-2 win against the New York Rangers, Nov. 23, 1992.
The Penguins won their third consecutive game at Madison Square Garden. Right winger Mike Needham gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 6:03 into the contest with a goal against goaltender Mike Richter. Left winger Jeff Daniels recorded the lone assist.
A goal off a slapper by right winger Joe Mullen at 16:37 of the third period made it a 2-0 game. Assists went to right winger Rick Tocchet and center Mario Lemieux.
The Rangers' first goal was scored at 2:53 of the second period on a power play by center Mark Messier against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Right winger Tony Amonte and center Darren Turcotte netted assists.
Lemieux scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 6:11 mark. The goal was unassisted.
Another power-play goal by Rangers right winger Mike Gartner made it a 3-2 contest. Assists were credited to Messier and defenseman James Patrick.
At 18:32 of the third period, Lemieux scored again against goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck to give the Penguins a 4-2 lead. Tocchet had the only assist.
Tocchet secured the win at 19:35 with an empty net goal off an assist from Mullen.
-Barrasso made 39 saves in the win.
