Twenty Years Later - Penguins 8, Blues 4 - 11-05-12
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 8-4 win against the Blues, Nov. 5, 1992.
The Penguins extended their winning streak to three games at the Civic Arena. Defenseman Larry Murphy gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 4:18 into the game with a goal off a slapper from the right circle against goaltender Guy Herbert. The only assist was recorded by defenseman Ulf Samuelsson.

At 11:48 of the first period, the Penguins took a 2-0 lead when center Mike Stapleton scored his first goal of the season while killing a penalty. Assists went to center Dave Tippett and goaltender Tom Barrasso.

Just 1:29 into the second period, the Blues got on the scoreboard with a power-play goal by defenseman Jeff Brown off assists from right wingers Nelson Emerson and Brett Hull.
St. Louis tied the game, 2-2, at the 5:31 mark when center Craig Janney scored on a power play. Hull and left winger Kevin Miller netted assists.
A power-play goal by right winger Rick Tocchet at 7:48 to regain the lead for the Penguins, 3-2. Center Mario Lemieux and Murphy recorded assists.

The Penguins went up 4-2 when right winger Jaromir Jagr scored on another power play with a slapper. Lemieux recorded the lone assist.

Only 1:55 into the third period, right winger Shawn McEachern scored the eventual game-winning goal on yet another power play. Former Blues right winger Joe Mullen and center Ron Francis had assists.

Lemieux scored with a wrister on the short side at the 5:12 mark to make it a 6-2 game off assists from Tocchet and Samuelsson.

At the 8:49 mark, defenseman Kjell Samuelsson scored his first goal of the season with a wrister from the right wing to give the Penguins a 7-2 lead. The goal was unassisted.

Brown scored another power-play goal at 11:56 to make the score 7-3. Miller and Hull collected assists.
Mullen scored his first goal of the season at the 12:49 mark to make it an 8-4 game. Assists went to Lemieux and Tocchet.

Left winger Philippe Bozon scored the game's final goal at 14:20 off assists from Emerson and right winger Igor Korolev.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 32 saves in the victory.
-Barrasso (10-0-2) set a franchise record by extending his unbeaten streak to 12 games. The previous mark was held by goaltender Michel Plass who had a 6-0-5 mark in the 1975-76 season.
-The three stars were 1.) Lemieux 2.) Tocchet 3.) Brown.
-Prior to the game, Jagr conducted a 15-minute phone conversation with former United States President Ronald Reagan. Reagan sought out Jagr after a story appeared in Sports Illustrated which revealed Jagr carried photos of Reagan in his school books as a youth in Czechoslovakia. Said Jagr, "He told me thank you for the nice talk about the USA and about him. It was my best day. I never talk to a guy like him. Ever."
-Penguins left winger Kevin Stevens left the game early after suffering a knee injury. He had a 13-game scoring streak snapped.
-Earlier in the day, the Penguins traded defenseman Jeff Chychrun to the Kings in exchange for defenseman Peter Ahola.
