Twenty Years Later - Penguins 7, Senators 2 -10-27-12
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 7-2 win against the Senators, Oct. 27, 1992.
The Penguins extended their season-opening unbeaten streak to 10 games and won their seventh consecutive game at the Ottawa Civic Centre. Late in the first period at the 19:33 mark, the Penguins took a 1-0 lead when right winger Rick Tocchet scored a power-play goal off a rebound against goaltender Peter Sidorkiewicz off assists from left winger Kevin Stevens and center Ron Francis.
Early in the second period at 1:19, Lemieux scored on a rebound to make it a 2-0 game. Stevens recorded the lone assist.
The Penguins took a 3-0 lead at the 6:32 mark when right winger Mike Needham scored witih a re-direction. Center Dave Tippett and left winger Jeff Daniels netted assists.
At 13:16, a goal by Lemieux made the score 4-0. Stevens and Tocchet were credited with assists.
Penguins defenseman Ulf Samuelsson scored his first goal of the season at the 17:11 mark. Left winger Troy Loney had the only assist.
Early in the third period, Samuelsson struck again at the 3:19 mark against goaltender Steve Weeks. The sole assist was recorded by right winger Shawn McEachern.
The Senators finally got on the scoreboard at the 7:23 mark when center Laurie Boschman against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Assists went to defensemen Norm Maciver and Brad Marsh.
Ottawa made it a 6-2 game less than three minutes later at 10:13 when left winger Darcy Loewen scored off assists from right winger Jim Thomson and Maciver.
Stevens scored the game's final goal at 17:20. Samuelsson and McEachern were credited with assists.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 26 saves in the win.
-The three stars were 1.) Lemieux 2.) Samuelsson 3.) Stevens.
-This was the Penguins' first game against the expansion Senators and in Ottawa.
-At 8-0-2, the Penguins were the only remaining unbeaten team in the NHL.
-The Penguins tied a record with their seventh consecutive win.
-The Senators recorded their eighth consecutive loss.
-Lemieux scored a goal for the 10th consecutive game.
