Twenty Years Later - Penguins 4, Devils 3 - 10-24-12
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-3 win against the Devils, Oct. 24, 1992.
The Penguins extended their season-opening unbeaten streak to nine games and won their sixth consecutive game at Brendan Byrne Arena. After a scoreless first period, the Penguins took a 1-0 lead when left winger Kevin Stevens scored his 10th goal of the season 51 seconds into the second period with a backhander against goaltender Craig Billington. Center Mario Lemieux and defenseman Larry Murphy netted assists.

Exactly five minutes later at the 5:51 mark, the Devils tied the game when left winger Claude Lemieux scored on a power play against goaltender Tom Barrasso off assists from defensemen Viacheslav Fetisov and Scott Stevens.
New Jersey took a 2-1 lead when center Janne Ojanen scored his first goal of the season. Left winger Bobby Holik recorded the only assist.
A power-play goal at 14:53 by right winger Rick Tocchet tied the game, 2-2, with a re-direction. Assists went to Mario Lemieux and defenseman Bryan Fogarty.

Late in the period at 18:56, Mario Lemieux put the Penguins up, 3-2, with a power-play goal off a one-timer from the left circle. Assists went to center Ron Francis and Tocchet.

Only 13 seconds into the third period, Ojanen tied the game again, 3-3, with another power-play score off a slapper. Claude Lemieux and defenseman Bruce Driver were credited with assists.
Less than two minutes later at 2:06, right winger Jaromir Jagr scored the game-winning goal on a rebound shot from the slot off assists from Francis and right winger Shawn McEachern.

-Barrasso made 29 saves in the victory.

-Lemieux extended his goal-scoring streak to nine games.

Also in the news that day:
-In his first career start, quarterback Kerry Collins threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns for No. 14 Penn State which defeated West Virginia, 40-26, at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, W.Va. To date, this was the last football game between the two schools.
-Quarterback Alex Van Pelt threw for 367 yards and two touchdowns for Pitt which lost to East Carolina, 37-31, at Pitt Stadium. Van Pelt became the sixth quarterback in NCAA history to reach the 10,000 career passing yards mark.
-A two-run double by outfielder Dave Winfield in the 11th inning helped the Blue Jays beat the Braves, 4-3, in Game 6 of the World Series at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Toronto won the series, 4-2, and became the first team outside the United States to win the World Series.
