Twenty Years Later: Penguins 5, Canadiens 2 - 10-15-12
Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the day they happened.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 5-2 win against the Canadiens, Oct. 15, 1992.
The Penguins extended their unbeaten streak to five games at the Civic Arena. Montreal took a 1-0 lead when rookie right winger Oleg Petrov scored scored his first career goal 3:27 into the game against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Center Denis Savard recorded the only assist.
Shortly after that, left winger Kevin Stevens tied the game, 1-1, when he scored against goaltender Patrick Roy at the 3:43 mark. Center Mario Lemieux and right winger Jaromir Jagr had assists.
At 6:43, center Ron Francis scored his first goal of the season to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Right winger Shawn McEachern netted the lone assist.
Jagr scored the eventual game-winning goal at 15:38 off assists from Lemieux and Stevens.
Lemieux scored at 5:33 of the second period to make it a 4-1 game. Left winger Troy Loney and defenseman Bryan Fogarty were credited with assists.
Just 3:00: into the third period, McEachern scored the Penguins' fifth goal of the game on a power play. Assists went to defenseman Paul Stanton and Fogarty.
The game's final goal was scored by center Kirk Muller at 12:50 to make it 5-2. Right winger Mike Keane and defenseman Mathieu Schneider had assists.
Notes:
-Barrasso made 32 saves in the victory.
-The game's three stars were 1.) Lemieux 2.) Barrasso 3.) Jagr.
-Right winger Rick Tocchet missed his second consecutive game due to a bruised right ankle.

Also in the news that day:
-Left winger Luc Robitaille scored two goals for the Los Angeles Kings who defeated the the Calgary Flames, 4-0 at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, Calif. At 4-1-0, the Kings tied the mark for best start in franchise history.
