Here's a rare bit of good hockey news.

The Penguins have signed defensemen Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta (right), both first-round picks in this summer's draft, to three-year entry-level contracts.

Pouliot, 18, was selected with the eighth overall pick which was acquired along with forward Brandon Sutter and defenseman Brian Dumoulin in a deal that sent forward Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes. In 72 games last season with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks, Pouliot (5-foot-11, 195 pounds) scored 59 points (11 goals, 48 assists).

A native of Finland, Maatta, 18, was selected No. 22 overall. In 58 game last season with the OHL's London Knights, Matta (6-foot-2, 206 pounds) scored 32 points (five goals, 27 assists).

Both players are expected to continue playing with their junior teams this season.
