-Today would've been the 75th birthday of former Penguins coach and hockey legend Herb Brooks. The much-celebrated coach of the United States men's hockey team which won the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics, Brooks took over as the Penguins' interim coach for Kevin Constantine early in the 1999-2000 season and led the team to a 29-21-2 record and a playoff appearance. The team went 6-5 in the postseason. Brooks stepped down as coach in the 2000 offseason and became a scout for the team. Brooks passed away Aug. 11, 2003 at the age of 66. Brooks was posthumously inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
