Penguins

-Happy 36th birthday to former Penguins defeneman Nolan Baumgartner. Claimed off waivers from the Canucks prior to the start of the 2003-04 season, Baumgartner, appeared in five games for the Penguins that season and was a minus-7. A month into the season, the Canucks re-claimed him off waivers. He currently is the captain of Chicago Wolves, the Canucks' AHL affiliate.

-Happy 41st birthday to former Penguins forward Justin Duberman. A free agent signing in November of 1992, Duberman's entire NHL career amounted to four games with the 1993-94 Penguins. During the 1994-95 lockoutout, he joined JYP HT Jyvaskyla in Finland.

Atlantic Division

-Scoreboard Watch for the Penguins: Shootout goals by Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds gave the Flyers a 2-1 win against the rival Capitals. Ilya Bryzgalov made 30 saves for Philadelphia. The Flyers are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and third place in the Eastern Conference with 94 points, four fewer than the Penguins.

-The Rangers host a desperate and hot Sabres team tonight.

-Devils forward Travis Zajac could return to the lineup tonight against the Maple Leafs after being sidelined since Jan. 2 due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Northeast Division

-With forwards Matt Frattin ("upper-body") and Clarke MacArthur ("lower-body") dealing with injuries, the Maple Leafs recalled forwards Ryan Hamilton and Nazem Kadri from Toronto of the AHL.

Southeast Division

-Shootout goals by Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis and Teddy Purcell gave the Lightning a 3-2 win against the Oilers. Tom Pyatt scored two regulation goals for Tampa Bay while teammate Dwayne Roloson made 34 saves.

-Purcell > Edmonton's Nikolai Khabibulin:

-Capitals forward Alexander Semin missed last night's game due to a suspected "lower-body" injury.

-Defenseman Ed Jovanovski, one of the Panthers' first star players in franchise history, has been a big reason the team is on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time in over a decade.

Central Division

-Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith will have a disciplinary hearing today in regards to an elbow he gave to the head of Canucks forward Daniel Sedin Wednesday.

-The Red Wings demoted defenseman Doug Janik to Grand Rapids of the AHL.

Northwest Division

-Mason Raymond had a goal and an assist for the Canucks in a 3-2 win against the Stars. Captain Henrik Sedin recorded two assists for Vancouver while teammate Corey Schneider made 26 saves.

-A shootout goal by Devin Setoguchi gave the Wild a 3-2 win versus the Flames. Josh  Harding made 27 saves in the victory. Calgary has lost four consecutive games.

-Wild defensemen Jared Spurgeon (possible concussion) and Marco Scandella (undisclosed) each left the game due to injuries.

-Canucks forward Daniel Sedin is out indefinitely due to a potential head injury.

-Without mentioning him by name, Canucks coach Alain Vigneault called out referee Dan O'Halloran for how he handled Keith's hit on Sedin.

-The Flames demoted forward Guillaume Desbiens to Abbotsford of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-Antti Niemi made all of 16 saves for the Sharks who edged the Bruins, 2-1. San Jose has won three out of its past five games. Boston had a two-game winning streak snapped.

-San Jose's Brent Burns put a little too much on this shot:

-Niemi and teammate Martin Havlat had a moment:

-Shootout goals by Mike Richards and Jeff Carter gave the Kings a 1-0 win against the Blues. Jonathan Quick made 35 saves for the Kings to earn a shutout. St. Louis' Brian Elliott also earned a shutout by making 37 saves.

-A goal and an assist by Raffi Torres led the Coyotes to a 3-2 win against the Avalanche. Gilbert Brule recorded two assists for Edmonton while teammate Mike Smith made 39 saves.

-Stars defenseman Mark Fistric will be sidelined at least a week due to an abdominal injury.

-Forward Tommy Wingels was named the Sharks' nominee for the Masterton Trophy.
