Penguins

-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins recalled forward Nick Petersen from Wheeling.

-Happy 37th birthday to former Penguins forward Andre Roy. A free agent signing following the 2004-05 lockout, Roy, worked as the Penguins' primary enforcer for parts of two seasons. In 2005-06, he appeared in 42 games recording three points and 116 penalty minutes. Roy would appear in five games and fail to record a point in 2006-07 before being put on waivers and claimed by his former team, the Lightning. In 47 games with the Penguins, he scored three points and 128 penalty minutes.

-Happy 58th birthday to former Penguins forward Kelly Pratt. A free agent signing in the 1974 offseason, Pratt's NHL career amounted to 22 games with the 1974-75 Penguins. He recorded six points.In the 1975 offseason, he was sold to Hershey of the AHL.

Atlantic Division

-Martin Brodeur made 30 saves for the Devils in a 1-0 shutout of the rival Rangers. It was Brodeur's 117th career shutout.

-An apparent game-tying goal by Rangers forward Artem Anisimov with four seconds remaining in regulation was wiped out when Rangers forward Marian Gaborik was penalized for interfering with Brodeur.

-The disputed  non-goal:

-“I tried to stop, and (Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov) just pushes me into him. If I had run him, I wouldn’t say a word, but I tried to stop and he pushed me into Brodeur, so we could have been in overtime right now.” - Gaborik.

-Off the opening faceoffs, New York's Mike Rupp squared off with New Jersey's Cam Janssen while New York's Brandon Prust fought New Jersey's Eric Boulton:

-"I said to him, ‘How’s the hand?’ He said, ‘It feels good.' I said, ‘Want to do it?’ He said yes. Simple as that. That’s what we do.” - Janssen on what he said to Rupp, who is dealing with a thumb injury.

-Evgeni Nabokov made 45 saves for the Islanders in a 1-0 shutout shootout win against the Flyers. Frans Nielsen and John Tavares scored in the shootout for New York. Ilya Bryzgalov made 18 saves for Philadelphia and was also credited with a shutout.

-Islanders defenseman and Upper St. Clair native Dylan Reese left the game due to a potential knee injury.

-Flyers forward Daniel Briere returned to the lineup after missing six games due to a concussion.

-The Islanders signed forward Frans Nielsen (right) to a four-year contract worth a total of $11 million. He will have a salary cap hit of $2.75 million. In the final year of a contract with a $550,000 cap hit. In 52 games this season, he has scored 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists).

-The Devils demoted forward Brad Mills to Albany of the AHL.

Northeast Division

-The Bruins demoted forward Zach Hamill to Providence of the AHL.

Southeast Division

-Tomas Vokoun made 42 saves and led the Capitals to a 4-0 shutout of the Panthers. Captain Alex Ovechkin scored two goals for Washington while teammate Jason Chimera added a goal and an assist.

-Ovechkin simply torched Florida's Scott Clemmensen for his first goal:

-Ondrej Pavelec made 17 saves for the Jets who defeated the Maple Leafs, 2-1. Toronto had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Central Division

-Two goals by David Perron led the Blues to a 3-1 win against the Senators. Former Senators goaltender Brian Elliott made 28 saves in the victory. Ottawa has lost seven consecutive games.

-Blues forward Matt D'Agostini left the game in the first period after being stuck in the head.

-David Savard had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets who beat the Wild, 3-1. Curtis Sanford made 28 saves in the victory.

-The NHL is expected to officially announce next season's Winter Classic between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings at Michigan Stadium (right) Thursday.

Northwest Division

-Shootout goals by Alex Burrows and Alexander Edler gave the Canucks a 4-3 win against the Predators. Byron Bitz added a regulation goal and an assist for Vancouver while captain Henrik Sedin recorded two assists. Roberto Luongo made 37 saves in the victory.

-David Jones had two goals and an assist for the Avalanche which defeated the Blackhawks, 5-2. Paul Stastny recorded two assists for Colorado while teammate Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 29 saves. The Avalanche snapped a five-game losing streak. Duncan Keith netted two assists for Chicago.

-The Oilers recalled forward Magnus Paajarvi from Oklahoma City of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-Jonathan Quick made 24 saves for the Kings in a 3-1 victory against the Lightning. Tampa Bay failed to record a point for the first time in seven games.

-A goal and an assist by Radim Vrbata led the Coyotes to a 4-1 win against the Stars. Ray Whitney recorded two assists for Phoenix while teammate Mike Smith made 28 saves.

-Sharks forward Andrew Murray cleared waivers and was demoted to Worcester of the AHL. Additionally, the Sharks loaned goaltender Antero Niittymaki to the Syracuse Crunch, the Ducks' AHL affiliate.

Adams Division

-Former Nordiques/Avalanche/Sharks/Maple Leafs/Coyotes/Flames/Wild forward Owen Nolan officially announced his retirement.
