Shootout success - 01-18-12

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

With talents such as Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin at their disposal (when healthy), the Penguisn tend to get lauded for their success in the shootout based on their offensive abilities.

The other part of their shootout success tends to get completely overlooked.

In other words, Marc-Andre Fleury (above, stopping Carolina's Jeff Skinner) doesn't get the credit he deserves a lot of times in this area.

Among active players, only two other goaltenders, both all-stars, have more career wins in shoots than Fleury.

Player, teams Wins
Henrik Lundqvist, Rangers 39
Martin Brodeur, Devils 38
Marc-Andre Fleury, Penguins 31
Ryan Miller, Sabres 31
Kari Lehtonen, Thrashers/Stars 27

In terms of shootout save percentage, Fleury is also the third-best active goaltender in this statistic:

Player, teams Shots Goals Save
Pct.
Pekka Rinne, Predators 116 25 .784
Johan Hedberg, Stars/Thrashers/Devils 111 25 .775
Marc-Andre Fleury, Penguins 145 34 .766
Henrik Lundqvist, Rangers 254 60 .764
Antti Niemi, Blackhawks/Sharks 85 21 .753

Note: Backup goaltender Brent Johnson has allowed 13 goals in 55 career shootout shots (.764).
