With Paul Martin a game-time decision due to an illness, the Penguins recalled defenseman Simon Despres from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.
Despres (6-foot-4, 205-pound) has appeared in 13 NHL games this season and has four points (one assists, three assists). In 25 AHL games, he has seven points (three goals, four assists).
Despres, 20, was a first-round pick in 2009.
EN Says: Despres is an NHL-caliber defenseman right now regardless of his contract situation. However, since he is still on an entry-level contract and doesn't run the risk of having to be sent through waivers, Despres is going to be the first candidate to be relegated to the AHL anytime the Penguins are relatively healthy on the blue line.
It's kind of similar to Alex Goligoski's situation in 2008-09.
