Because there hasn't been nearly enough Steelers-related news today - 07-13-11

This might be the least absurd piece of Steelers-related news today.

Bill Cowher's daughter is marrying an NHL enforcer.

Princeton-educated Meagan Cowher is tying the knot with Kings goon Kevin Westgarth. A man who had this happen to him last season:

The story actually isn't as absurd as it seems on the surface. Both were athletes at Princeton. Cowher as a basketball player and Westgarth in hockey. Cowher was a three-time all-Ivy Leaguer while Westgarth had a mostly non-descript career with the Tigers and never averaged more than a point per game.

Westgarth went undrafted and found work as a free agent signing with the Manchester Monarchs, the Kings' AHL affiliate. After recording at least 165 penalty minutes in each of his first three full seasons at the AHL level, Westgarth finally broke through as a full-time NHL enforcer this past season appearing in 56 games and recording 105 penalty minutes.

According to, Westgarth unofficially went 6-6-3 in his 15 NHL fights last season.

Westgarth talked to about meeting his future father in law for the first time at a Steelers game: “I didn’t think it would be, until maybe five minutes before I was going to meet him the first time. We were at a game in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers beat the Browns 41-0, so I think that made everything a little easier. He’s been a great guy to talk to over the years.”

The wedding is scheduled for Aug. 12.
