Penguins

-Two goals by Brandon DeFazio led the Wheeling Nailers to a 5-4 win against the Toledo Walleye. Joey Haddad each recorded two assists for the Nailers while Patrick Killeen made 31 saves in the victory.

-Happy 44th birthday to former Penguins forward Lee Giffin. A second-round pick of the club in 1985, Giffin spent parts of two seasons wth the Penguins. As a rookie in 1986-87, he appeared in eight games and scored two points. He followed that up in 1987-88 by playing in 19 games and recorded two assists. After spending all of 1988-89 with the Penguins' IHL affiliate in Muskegon, Giffin was traded to the Rangers for future cosiderations in the 1989 offseason. In 27 games with the Penguins, Giffin scored four points.

Atlantic Division

-Radek Martinek, former Penguins forward Matt Moulson and P.A. Parenteau each had a goal and an assist for the Islanders in a 6-2 rout of the rival Rangers. Fire Ray Shero. Defenseman Dylan Reese, an Upper St. Clair native, recorded three assists for the Islanders while teammate John Tavares added two assists. Al Montoya made 25 saves in the victory.

Northeast Division

-Scoreboard Watch for the Penguins: Nazem Kadri's shootout goal gave the Maple Leafs a 4-3 win at Boston. Joffrey Lupul had two goals and an assist in regulation for Toronto while teammate Luke Schenn netted a goal and an assist. James Reimer made 35 saves in the victory. Brad Marchand recorded a goal and an assist for the Bruins. The Bruins are in third place in the Eastern Conference with 97 points, one less than the fourth-place Penguins.

-The Senators signed undrafted free agent forward Stephane Da Costa to a two-year entry-level contract. Da Costa was reported to be pursued by all 30 NHL teams.

Southeast Division

-Scoreboard Watch for the Penguins: Chris Mason made 43 saves for the Thrashers in a 1-0 shutout of the Flyers. The Flyers are in first place of the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division with 102 points, four more than the Penguins who are in fourth and second places respectively.

-The Thrashers have gone 7-2-1 against the Flyers and Capitals this season.

-Scoreboard Watch for the Penguins: An overtime goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets in a 4-3 win against the Blue Jackets. John Carlson added a goal and an assist for Washington while teammate Brooks Laich recorded two assists. Michal Neuvirth made 20 saves in the victory. Matt Calvert and Tomas Kubalik each netted two assists for Columbus. The Capitals are in second place of the Eastern Conference with 101 points, three more than the Penguins.

-Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman is hospitalized due to a leg hematoma.

Central Division

-A goal and an assist by Martin Erat led the Predators to a 3-2 win at Colorado. Pekka Rinne made 27 saves in the victory. The Avalanche has lost four consecutive games.

-Red Wings coach Mike Babcock went all Herb Brooks on his team a day after it allowed 10 goals to the Blues.

-The Red Wings demoted goaltender Thomas McCollum to Grand Rapids of the AHL.

-With captain Rick Nash dealing with an undisclosed injury, the Blue Jackets recalled forward Tomas Kubalik from Springfield of the AHL.

-The Blues demoted forward Adam Cracknell to Peoria of the AHL.

Northwest Division

-A goals and an assist by Daniel Sedin led the Canucks to a 3-1 win against the Kings. Sedin reached the 100-point mark for the season while Roberto Luongo made 18 saves in the victory.

-The Avalanche recalled defenseman Cameron Gaunce from Lake Erie of the AHL.

-The Wild demoted forward Casey Wellman to Houston of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-Antti Niemi made 29 saves for the Sharks in a 6-0 shutout of the Stars. Patrick Marleau scored two goals for San Jose while teammates Marc-Edouard Vlasic netted a goal and an assist.
