PREGAME

FIRST PERIOD
19:45: Right off the draw, a hearty "LET'S GO PENS!" chant rains down.
19:38: Thornton chops a slapper from the left point. Fleury kicks it out.
19:18: Neal shows what he's all about early on as he and Dupuis combine to smack Murray in the right wing corner in San Jose's zone.
18:13: Niskanen hops on the ice take his first shift as a Penguin along with Ben Lovejoy on the blue line.
16:39: After Tim Wallace smacks Murray in the left wing corner in San Jose's zone, Vitale steps up and hits John McCarthy on the left wing.
15:44: Neal re-directs a weak wrister by Dupuis from the left wing wide of the cage.
14:26: Kennedy works the puck up the right wing, gains the offensive zone and chucks a wrister on net from the point. Niemi gloves it.
14:13: Deryk Engelland collects an errant wraparound by the Sharks at the right point. He snaps it off at the net. Adasm appears to re-direct it slightly on net. Niemi makes the initial save. The rebound hops to the slot. Matt Cooke chops it on net. Niemi makes another save but allows a rebound to his right. Tyler Kennedy is sitting right there beyond the crease to sweep it into the cage with a forehand. A nice dirty goal off a turnover. Cooke and Engelland get assists. We're thinking Adams will get an assist instead of Engelland eventually. The "Woo-Hoo!" song is played. So is the WWE "KENNEDY!" clip. Penguins 1-0.
{youtube width="480" height="390"}iRyO26H3GhM{/youtube}
{youtube width="480" height="390"}lCjn0QuJ5o8{/youtube}
12:33: Marleau pushes a backhander on net form the slot. Fleury boots it out with his left leg.
12:00: Joe Vitale steps up and plants Kyle Wellwood into the left wing boards in the Sharks' zone. Oof.
10:56: A slapper by Murray is kicked out by Fleury.
10:44: Orpik is sent off for hooking Couture. Michalek, Jordan Staal, Cooke and Kris Letang take the ice.
10:34: Michalek blocks a wrister by Marleau in the right circle. Marleau recovers the puck and jabs it on net immediately. Fleury kicks it out to the left win boards.
9:21: Michalek picks up a loose puck behind his net and whips it down for a big clear. With Orpik in the box, the Penguins opt to sent out Lovejoy and Engelland instead of Niskanen as their second set of blueliners on the penalty kill.
8:44: The Penguins kill off Orpik's minor and are rewarded with an applause from the home fans.
7:47: Joe Pavelski whips a big wrister from above the left circle. Niskanen blocks it with his left foot.
6:27: Wallace forces a turnover by Marc-Edouard Vlasic on the right wing in the Sharks' zone. The puck skids towards the slot. Vitale jumps on it and sweeps it on net. Niemi is in perfect position and kicks it out.
3:57: Neal has a wrister from the left circle blocked out of play by Murray.
2:39: Engelland is sent off for cross-checking Torrey Mithcell in the right wing corner in the Penguins' zone. Forget cross checking. He tried to embed Mitchell into the ice. Cooke, Michalek, Orpik and Staal take the ice.
1:57: Thornton makes a tremendous cross-ice pass from deep on the left wing to Marleau in the right circle. Marleau rips a wrister. Orpik kneels down to block it.
1:30: Pavelski snaps off a wrister from the left circle. Michalek kneels down and blocks it to the corner.
1:24: Boyle controls the puck at the right point, fakes a slapper and deals a nice pass to the left circle. Pavelski cranks a one-timer on net. Fleury slides to his right to knock it dead and cover.
0:39: Engelland's minor is killed. The Sharks generated a few nice chances there.
0:03: Murray completely upends Vitale on the right wing boards at the Sharks' blue line with a high check.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 1, Sharks 0.
FIRST INTERMISSION

-First things first, Orpik left the ice after blocking that shot by Marleau around the 2:00 mark.
-A good, solid period of Dan Bylsma hockey by the Penguins. Outside of the two power plays the Sharks had, the Penguins controlled play for the most part. They possessed the puck in the offensive zone, got dirty on the boards and got physical with the Sharks. They forced a mistake and cashed in for one goal.
-Neal and Niskanen have each been solid. Neal was physical and went to the net. He even created a scoring chance on a re-direct which went wide. Niskanen looked fairly comfortable in his own zone but didn't really have an opportunity to show off any of his offensive skills.
-Neal had 5:01 of ice time on six shifts. No shots on net.
-Niskanen had 5:25 of ice time on seven shifts and no shots on net.
-The Sharks created a few things with their two power plays. The collection of offensive talent they have is impressive.
-Once again, the Penguins had some issues with discipline.
-Did anyone see Dany Heatley?
-Vitale and Wallace had a solid period. They were physical and even created one quality scoring chance.
-The Sharks have an 11-6 lead in shots.
-Ryane Clowe and Marleau each lead the game with two shots.
-Boyle leads the game with 8:31 of ice time.
-Letang leads the Penguins with 8:17.
-The Sharks have a 9-6 lead in faceoffs (60 percent).
-Thornton is 4 for 5 (80 percent).
-Adams is 2 for 5 (40 percent).
-Niskanen, Michalek, Lovejoy, Letang and Vlasic each lead the game with two blocked shots.
-Speaking of Orpik, he's your coverboy for IceTime tonight:

-For the second consecutive game, we have a delay to start the second period on account of a lighting display. Time to give Consol Energy back its naming rights money.
-Cotton Eyed Joe is busted out during the delay:
-They should re-direct power from the scoreboard to the lights. That's what they did in Apollo 13:
{youtube width="480" height="390"}wW7MGTSbSxc{/youtube}
-Alex Goligoski traded. Two games with power issus. You do the math.
-After approximately 20 minutes of delay, the game restarts. Orpik did not return.
SECOND PERIOD
19:11: Kennedy gainst he offensive zone with speed and cranks a slapper from above the right circle. Niemi boots it out.
18:29: Adams is sent off for hooking Wellwood behind the Shark's net. Looked like Wellwood held on to his stick and bought the call. Dupuis, Letang, Michalek and Staal take the ice.
18:26: Off a faceoff win, Marleau snaps off a wrister from the right half wall. Fleury eats it up.
17:54: Thornton snap soff a wrister from the right half wall. Marleau re-directs it a bit. Fleury kicks it out.
16:59: And the Sharks cash in finally. Setoguchi controls the puck behind the Penguins' net and deals a pass to Couture in the left circle. Couture chops a one-timer to the far side which blows by Fleury's glove hand. What a shot. The Penguins were going to eventually pay for taking penalties. Setoguchi and Demers get assists. Penguins 1, Sharks 1.
15:45: Attendance is announced as 18,253. It is the team's 198th consecutive sellout.
15:30: Brett Sterling is getting a shift with Neal and Staal.
14:04: Wellwood attempts a wraparound from the left of the cage. Fleury denies it.
13:21: After Lovejoy forces a turnover by Pavelski behind the Sharks' net, Dupuis picks it up, swoops around and tries a wraparound on his forehand. Niemi covers to freeze play.
13:03: From the left wing corner, Staal deals a pass to Neal at the left faceoff dot. Neal chops a shot. Murray blocks it high over the cage.
12:39: Oh huge block! Thronton deals a pass from the right circle to Setoguchi in the left circle. Setoguchi cranks it on net. Fleury makes the save. The rebound hops loose in the crease. Couture has a sure goal but Dupuis' right skate holds it out. Huge block by Dupuis. Fleury owes him a Molson.
10:53: Pavelski tries to corral a loose puck in the left wing corner but Mike Rupp dumps him along the boards.
9:37: On a delayed penalty, Neal deals a pass to Engelland at the right point. Engelland chucks it into traffic. Thornton touches the puck. Play is halted. Thornton is sent off for hooking Staal. Neal, Staal, Letang, Sterling and Kennedy take the ice. We're not seeing this Sterling on the point thing.
8:57: Vlasic mugs Letang in the left wing corner corner of the Shark's zone. Letang responds by cross checking. Vlasic cross checks back. No penalties.
8:25: Kennedy lifts a wrister from the left circle. Despite a screen by Staal, Niemi eats it up.
8:05: Michalek booms a big one-timer from teh top of the slot. It hits a body in front. Cooke snaps the rebound off. Despite a screen by Rupp, Niemi stretches out to make a tough glove save.
7:37: The Thornton minor is killed. Not much going on there for the Penguins.
5:41: Staal deals a backhand pass to Niskanen at the left point. Niskanen makes a nifty move by a defender and rips a wrister. Niemi punches it out.
5:20: Kennedy deals a pass off the right wing to the slot. Niskanen charges in and has a chance but the puck takes a hop and Niskanen can't make contact. Nice idea. Two solid scoring chances within half a minute for Niskanen.
3:31: Letang makes a nice play behind his own net and bumps Pavelski off the puck.
2:36: Another Penguins penalty. Niskanen is sent off for tripping Ben Eager. Lovejoy, Talbot, Mat Cooke and Michalek take the ice.
2:28: Pavelski rips a wrister from the left wing juuust wide on the near side.
2:06: From the right point, Pavelsk deals a pass to Boyle in the left circle. Boyle drops the hammer and puts a big one-timer on net. Fleury bodies it to the ice, collects the rebound with his stick and covers to freeze play.
0:36: Niskanen's minor is killed. The Sharks put a lot of pressure on the Penguins there.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 1, Sharks 1.
SECOND INTERMISSION

-The Penguins' lack of displine bit them there. Eventually the Sharks were going to cash in on a power play. They have too much talent not to succeed.
-The Penguins are starting to get thin on the blue line with Martin already out and Orpik now unavailable. Engelland and Lovejoy are going to have to pick up more minutes than their used to and Niskanen is in his first game with the team. Not an ideal situation.
-Niskanen has been pretty solid. He's had a few solid scoring chances and has been responsible in all three zones. He has 10:09 of ice time on 15 shifts, two shots and three blocked shots.
-Neal has had a few chances, but it would be a stretch to say he has stood out. He has 11:46 of ice time on 13 shifts and no shots on net.
-We're not crazy abou this experiment with Brett Sterling on the point for the power play. It reminds us of that brief Ruslan Fedodtenko on the point experiment last season when the defense was ravaged with injuries.
-The Sharks have a 20-15 lead in shots.
-Cooke, Kennedy, Thornton and Marleau each lead the game with three shots.
-Letang leads the game with 18:38 of ice time.
-Boyle leads the Sharks with 17:28.
-The Sharks lead in faceoffs, 21-15 (58 percent).
-Pavelski is 6 for 9 (67 percent).
-Vitale is 4 for 4 (100 percent).
-Michalek and Adams each lead the game with four blocked shots.
-Vlasic leads the Sharks with three.
-EN cohort Ron Michalek found a horrible jersey foul felony. A Wayne Gretzky Sharks jersey?

-No word yet on Orpik's status. He has not returned for the third period.
THIRD PERIOD
18:58: Engelland steps up in the neutral zone and runs over Heatley on the right wing boards. Oof. Clowe hits Engelland from behind to the ice as payback. Engelland gets up. Clowe challenges him to a fight and even drops a glove. Engelland declines. NO penalty. Is it shocking to know Bill McCreary is refereeing this game?
18:27: Letang rips a wrister from above the left circle. It gets blocked on its way to the net. Niemi kicks it out with his left leg.
16:38: Setoguchi snaps off a heavy wrister from above the left circle. Fleury kicks it out.
15:57: Dupuis carries the puck into the offensive zone and leaves a drop pass for Neal in the slot. Neal picks it up and uncorks a rising wrister. Niemi is handcuffed a bit by the shot but knocks it down with his right shoulder and covers to freeze play.
15:12: Wellwood puts a wrister on net from the slot. Fleury punches it away.
14:32: Letang and Lovejoy appear to have a miscommunciation in their own zone and the Sharks take advantage. Letang chases after a dump in in his won zone and taps it behind the cage to the right wing circle. Lovejoy is in no-man's land in the slot. Heatley takes the puck and deals it to Marleau behind the net. Marleau pushe ito the crease and jams it by Fleury's right leg. A lot went wrong there for the Penguins. Heatley gets the only assist. Sharks 2-1.
11:54: Marleau gains the offensive zone and floats a wrister from the left wing. Fleury fights it off.
11:03: Sharks are doing a lot of passing in their own end of the ice. Not even really pressing the attack. Eating up clock. It's very reminiscent of the Red Wings. And don't forget, Sharks coach Todd McLellan used to be an assistant in Detroit.
10:53: Michalek lifts a heavy wrister from the right wing. Niemi knocks it down with a "thud."
8:46: Staal has a chance with a loose puck to the left of the cage but can't control it enough to get a shot off.
8:34: Big chance here for the Penguins as Setoguchi is nabbed for holding Staal on the right wing. Neal, Staal, Kennedy, Sterling and Letang take the ice.
7:43: Letang rips a wrister from the left circle wide to the far side.
7:23: Cooke drops Demers behind the Sharks net with a rough shoulder on shoulder check into the boards. Demers is slow to recover. Mario Lemieux is a hypocite!!!!!!!
7:01: Cooke deals a cross ice pass from the left wing to Letang. Letang takes the pass, moves to the right circle and rips a wrister on net. Niemi challenges the shot and gloves it. Big save.
6:34: Setoguchi's minor is killed. The Penguins wasted that chance.
5:44: Conner pushes a puck to the crease from the lright of the cage. Talbot is there but can't get a clean stick on it. Niemi covers to freeze play.
4:22: Kennedy rushes up the right wing and is tackled by Vlasic. Kennedy responds by holding on to Vlasic's stick. NO penalties.
4:13: Wellwood tosses a wrister on net from above the left circle. Fleury eats it up.
4:01: Mitchell rips a wrister from the left circle. Fleury boots it out. Pavelski picks up the rebound in the right circle and punches to the far side. Fleury fights it off with is blocker. Wellwood jumps on the rebound and jabs it on net. Fleury's blocker comes up huge again. BIG saves. A goal there ends the game.
1:31: Marleau whips a wrister at the cage from the left wing. It hits off Fleury and bounces onto the back of the netting. Officials freeze play.
1:18: Fleury is pulled for an extra attacker. Coutre pucks up a loose puck after Letang's stick breaks.
0:50: Oh wow!!! What a play! After a turnover by Murray in his own zone, the Penguins work it aroudn the boards. Cooke deals it from behidn the net to Staal in the left circle. Staal jabs it on net. Niemi makes the save but allows another rebound to his left. And once again, Kennedy is there to bang it into the empty cage. Where are the Penguins without Tyler Flipping Kennedy right now? Staal and Cooke get assists. This places explodes in noise. The "Woo-Hoo!" song and WWE "Kennedy" clip are played. Penguins 2, Sharks 2.
{youtube width="480" height="390"}iRyO26H3GhM{/youtube}
{youtube width="480" height="390"}lCjn0QuJ5o8{/youtube}
0:33: Wellwood whips a wrister from the right circle. Fleury kicks it out of play.
0:00: End of period. Penguins 2, Sharks 2.
THIRD INTERMISSION

-The Sharks have a 34-23 lead in shots.
OVERTIME
4:49: Neal snaps off a heavy wrister from the slot. Niemi punches it out with a "thud."
4:18: Niclas Wallin appears to get away with a trip on Kennedy behind the Sharks' net. Kennedy may have embellished that bit. No call.
3:06: Cooke comletely dumps Vlasic with a shoulder check on the right wing boards at the San Jose blue line. Letang is also a casulty in the collision. He's slow to get up.
2:03: Wallin snaps off a wrister from the left point. Fleury gloves it.
1:45: Kennedy is thinking hat trick and taps a backhander from the left circle wide on the near side.
1:04: WHAT! A! SAVE! Niskanen turns over the puck at the San Jose blue line. Thornton takes it and deals to Marleau who is off on a breakaway. He moves in on net, goes backhand and is ROBBED by Fleury's glove hand. WOW! Niskanen owes Fleury a Molson for that. HUGE SAVE. Niskanen taps Fleury on the legs in appreciation.
0:04: Oh what a heart breaker. Vlasic picks up a puck at the left piont and drives it on net. It hits a body in front. Marleau picks it up in the slot and snaps it over the left leg of helpless Fleury. Ouch. So close to a shootout. Couture and Vlasic get assists. End of game. Sharks 3, Penguins 2.
POSTGAME

-First things first. Dan Bylsma provided no update on Brooks Orpik but Orpik was spotted outside the locker room with some sort of wrap or guard on his right hand.
-What a kick to the gut that was. Sure, the Penguins probably lost the shootout. The Sharks are loaded with talent while the bulk of the Penguins' talent in in the trainer's room. But with how Fleury was going, you had to think they had a chance in a shootout.
-Unless your a Sharks fan, you have to feel bad for Fleury. He was outstanding. He made a series of three saves with roughly four minutes left to keep his team alive. Then he stones an all-star like Patrick Marleau in overtime to keep things tied. He deserved better.
-That all said, the Penguins should take some satisfaction from getting a point. The Sharks had Patrick Marleau, Joe Pavelski, Joe Thornton and others. The Penguins have Tyler Kennedy. On top of that, they're playing short on defense. They scraped out a point from a game they should've lost in regulation.
-The Penguins defense gave a hearty effort under bad circumstances. They were without Paul Martin to begin with. Then Orpik goes down. Niskanen was forced to pick up a lot of minutes in his debut. And Engelland and Lovejoy were forced to play more minutes than they usually get as the No. 6 defensemen.
-Neal and Niskanen were okay in their debuts. Niskanen probably stood out more than Neal. Niskanen absorbed some significant minutes, and outside of his turnover which led to Marleau's breakaway in overtime, he was solid. He had 19:33 of ice time on 26 shifts, three shots and three blocked shots.
-We have a feeling Niskanen's turnover might've been a result of having been worn out.
-Neal was solid. He was around the net creating traffic. He was physical too. It would be a stretch to say he stood out though. He had 20:48 of ice time on 24 shiftstwo shots and was a plus-1.
-Niemi was strong, but both of Kennedy's goals came off rebounds he allowed.
-Once again, penalties hurt the Penguins. They only allowed one power play goal, but they spent a lot of time killing penalties. That's rough for a team short on (healthy) talent.
-Logan Couture had an interesting quote about the Penguins' issues on defense with Orpik out: "We saw how Orpik went down in the first and we wanted to keep getting pucks behind their (defense), finishing them. We knew they'd tire out. I think Letang, it seemed like he played 40 minutes tonight. We were trying to work him, work their whole (defensive) corp and sustain pressure in their end."
-He's right. The Michalek and Letang each logged more than half an hour of ice time tonight. Yeesh. We wouldn't be surprised if they had maitenance days tomorrow.
-Tyler Kennedy has stepped up as this team's defacto star forward. He's scored several key goals in this stretch of games without Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and others. He's not an all-star by any means, but where is this team without Kennedy?
-The Penguins led in shots, 38-26.
-Marleau led the game with seven shots.
-Cooke, Kennedy and Letang each led the game with four shots.
-Letang led the game with 31:21 of ice time. Oof.
-Michalek was right behind him with 30:54.
-Boyle led the Sharks with 25:25.
-The Penguins had a 33-30 edge in faceoffs (52 percent).
-Vitale was 8 for 8 (100 percent).
-Marleau was 7 for 13 (54 percent).
-Michalek, Adams, Letang, Ian White and Demers each led the game with four blocked shots.
-Kennedy became the franchise's 70th's leading scorer all-time with 110 points. He passed up Wayne Bianchin, Jim Johnson and Petr Sykora (109 points each) on the team's all-time scoring list.
-Cooke became the team's 94th leading score all-time with 87 points. He passed up Chuck Arnason, Chris Kunitz and Jiri Slegr (86 points each).
