-Happy 43nd birthday to former Penguins defenseman Frantisek Kucera. Kucera came to the Penguins at the 2001 trade deadline in a deal that sent a sixth-round pick to the Blue Jackets. He appeared in seven games for the Penguins that season and recorded two assists. In the 2001 offseason, he was traded to the Capitals along with some other guy in exchange for Kris Beech, Michal Sivek, Ross Lupaschuk.

Atlantic Division

-Rangers forward and former Penguin Ruslan Fedotenko will be sidelined three weeks following an appendectomy.

-Rangers forward Vaclav Prospal is expected to make his season debut tonight. He has missed the entire preseason and regular season due to a knee injury.

Northeast Division

-Alex Auld made 33 saves for the Canadiens in a 3-2 defeat of the Panthers. Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban each recorded two assists for Montreal.

-Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau is a Packers fan for one weekend at least.

Central Division

-Five goals from Johan Franze led the Red Wings to a 7-5 win against the Senators. Henrik Zetterberg recorded three assists for Detroit while teammates Nicklas Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski each netted two assists. Jimmy Howard made 29 saves in the victory. Milan Michalek had two goals for Ottawa.

Northwest Division

-Vancouver's Roberto Luongo made 23 saves in a 6-0 shutout of the Coyotes. Ryan Kesler scored two goals for the Canucks while teammate Mason Raymond netted a goal and an assist.

-Ryan Smyth scored two goals for the Kings in a 3-1 win at Edmonton. Jack Johnson netted a goal and two assists for Los Angeles while teammate Drew Doughty recorded two assists. Jonathan Quick made 32 saves in the victory.

-The Stars placed forward Tom Wandell (shoulder) on injured reserve and recalled forward Raymond Sawada from Texas of the AHL.
