Penguins at Rangers - 02-01-11

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

Apologies for the brief pregame stuff. We're having some technical issues.

-Guess where we are:

-The Penguins' starters are Matt Cooke, Tyler Kennedy, Jordan Staal, Kris Letang, Brooks Oprik and Marc-Andre Fleury.

-Their scratches are Ben Lovejoy, Mark Letestu and Evgeni Malkin.

-The Rangers' starters are Brian Boyle, Wojtek Wolski, Brandon Prust, Dan Girardi, Marc Staal and Henrik Lundqvist.

-Their scratches are Ruslan Fedotenko, Vaclav Prospal and Steve Eminger.

19:18: The Staals are brothers.

16:40: Kris Newbury is playing for the Rangers these days. You might recall him from his days in Toronto when he was tombstoned by former Penguins forward Ronald Petrovicky:

16:08: The Rangers go down low, get dirty and take a lead. Boyle backhands a pass to the slot. Wolski snaps off a wrister from the slot. It hits Orpik and deflects to shte side of the crease. Fleury overplays the inital shot by Wolski. Prust is there all alone behind him with the puck and taps it into the wide open net for a backhander. That lame "Let's Go Rangers" song plays. Wolski and Boyle get assists. Rangers 1-0.

14:05: Maxime Talbot is denied down low by Lundqvist.

14:03: Chris Conner is sent off for tripping Prust. Orpik, Zbynek Michalek, Cooke and Staal take the ice.

12:03: Just as the Conner penalty expires, the Penguins dodge a big one. Brandon Dubinsky taps a pass across the slot to Callahan. Callahan appears to have a wide open net to shoot at but punches the puck wide on the near side as he's wiped out by Orpik. He has to bury that.

10:54: Chris Kunitz snaps off a wrister from the right circle. Lundqvist steers it away with his stick.

10:31: Artem Anisimov races back behind the Penguins net for a puck. Unfortunately for him Brooks Orpik's left shoulder is waiting. Orpik sticks him on his wallet with a stiff check.

9:42: Michalek chops a one-timer from the left point. Lundqvist fights it off.

7:47: Letang sneaks up from the right point and chops a loose puck on net. Lundqvist fends it off.

5:41: Anisimov jumps on a loose puck on the right wing boards in the Penguins zone and snap off a quick wrister. Fleury fights it off.

3:57: Wolski whips a spinning wrister from the slot. Fleury fights it off despite traffic.

3:40: Ryan McDonagh pounds a shot from the left point. Fleury is square to the shot and fights it off.

3:27: Another mistake by the Penguins as Orpik chips a puck out of play. That's delay of game. Paul Martin, Michalek, Craig Adams and Jordan Staal take the ice.

2:11: Dubinsky gains the offensive zone on the left wing and pounds a simple slapper from the point. Fleury eats it up.

1:27: The Orpik minor is killed without much of a threat from the Rangers.

0:03: Dustin Jeffrey pounds a slapper from the right wing. Lundqvist fights it off.

0:00: End of period. Rangers 1, Penguins 0.

-One way to describe that period:

-Not a lot going on there offensively for either team. Both teams were tenative. Neither really maintained offensive pressure. Both teams seem content to grind out a one-goal game.

-It would be a stretch to say Dustin Jeffrey stood out. He needs to make more out of his opportunity on the top line.

-The Penguins actually have a 12-8 lead in shots.

-Adams leads the game with two shots.

-Michalek leads the game with 7:59 of ice time.

-Matt Gilroy leads the Rangers with 7:12.

-The Rangers controll faceoffs, 10-5 (67 percent).

-Anisimov and Dubinsky are each 3 for 3 (100 percent).

-Jeffrey is 3 for 5 (60 percent).

-Sauer leads the game with two blocked shots.

19:11: Mats Zuccarello and Ryan Callahan outwork Kris Letang for a puck in the left wing corner in the Penguins' zone. Zuccarello centers to to Derek Stepan in the slot. Stepan jabs it on net. Fleury simply rob him with his left leg.

18:57: Deryk Engelland slams Marian Gaborik into the side of the Penguins net and dislodges it.

18:32: Martin gains the offensive zone and slides a little pass to the slot. Kunitz swats a one-timer on net. Lundqvist fends it off.

18:19: The Rangers go to the net and get another goal. Gaborik whips a wrister from the left circle  on net. Fleury fights it off. The puck hops up into the air. Anisimov is standing there on the back door and swats the rebound out of mid-air into the net by Fleury's glove hand. Dubinsky and Gaborik get assists.  Rangers 2-0.

17:19: Play is halted as Sean Avery is on the ice in distress. He appeared to get elbowed in the face by Orpik. Orpik's right elbow was tucked into his body when he struck Avery. Avery gets up complaining to an official and asks "Are you ____ serious?!?"

16:46: During a stoppage, we're informed Arron Asham has left the bench and retreated to the locker room.

16:43: Off a faceoff, Engelland and Prust sdrop the gloves at center ice. They lock out. and psin a bunch. Engelland threws some right and lands a few. Prust holds him off. They mostly wrestly around until Prust falls backwards on his butt.

14:40: The Penguins get a break as Newbury is called for elbowing Fleury. Jeffrey, Staal, Kunitz, Letang and Alex Goligoski take the ice.

14:30: Dustin Jeffrey makes the most out of his opportunity. Jeffre takes a pass on the right point, moves intowards the circle and cranks a slapper which deflects off the stick of Dan Girard and beats Lundqvist on the blocker side. Jordan Staal appeared to have something of a screen on the shot as well. There's no such thing as a bad shot right? Kunitz and Goligoski get assists. Rangers 2-1.

14:19: Asham will not return.

11:09: Avery snaps off a wrister from the slot wide on the far side. He had a clean look at the net.

9:24: Another dirty goal. Talbot gains the offensive zone on the left wing and tosses a wrister on net. Lundqvist makes the save but allows a poor rebound to the slot. Mike Rupp drives to the net and beats Del Zotto to theh puck. He taps it on net by Lundqvist by his glove hand. Pretty poor effort by Lundqvist there. Talbot and Engelland get assists. Talbot now has 50 career assists and 99 career points. Penguins 2, Rangers 2.

9:04: Stepan is sent off for holding Martin. Jeffrey, Letang, Jordan Staal and  Goligoski take the ice.

7:04: The Penguins did next to nothing with that two minutes.

5:51: Looks like the Penguins have lost another forward, temporarily at least. Conner heads to the locker room after blocking a shot by Marc Staal. Before the puck drops, Conner returns. Never mind.

5:48: Whoa?!? Zbynek Michalek scores!?!?  Jeffrey wins a clean faceoff in the left circle in the offensive zone. Orpik gets the puck and taps it to Michalek at the left point. Michalek blasts a one-timer. It appears Kunitz reached his stick into the shooting lane and deflected it by Lundqvist's right leg. Wow. What an all-around effort on that goal.  Kunitz gets credit. Michalek and Orpik get assists. Penguins 3-2.

4:33: Play is halted as Prust is on the ice in aheap. A scrum breaks out. Prust rushed in and hit Kennedy to the ice with a hit from behind near the Rangers' bench. Jordan Staal comes over and gives Prust a shove then punches him in the face with his glove on. Prust drops to the ice like Glass Joe from "Mike Tyson's Punchout."

The scrum develops. Staal is given a five minute major and a match penalty. Godard will serve the major. Tall order here for the Penguins' penalty killers. Adams, Cooke, Michalek and Orpik take the ice.

2:08: Gilroy has a clean shot from the right circle but fans on the shot.

1:48: Callahan gains the offesnive zone on a stretch pass on the right wing. he pumps a slapper on net from the circle. Fleury is square to the shot and eats it up.

1:35: Boyle is denied in tight by Fleury.

1:24: Michalek blocks a slapper by Marc Staal from the right point. Cooke clears the rebound.

0:12: The Rangers were going to get one eventually. Del Zotto rips a wrister from the right point. Callahan is positioned right in front of Fleury and has his stick on the ice in the slot. He gets a piece of it with is forehand and re-directs it by Fleury on the blocker side. Another dirty goal. Del Zotto and Zuccarello get assists. Penguins 3, Rangers 3.

0:00: End of period. Penguins 3, Rangers 3.

-Things picked up quite a bit that period. Both teams took a few more chances.

-Dustin Jeffrey has done more than enough to show he belongs at this level.

-Apologies for the bief intermission report. Technical issues.

19:43: Just as the Staal major expires, Michalek is sent off for delay of game as he sent the puck out of play. Talbot, Dupuis, Martin and Orpik take the ice.

18:31: Things are evened up as Letang is high sticked by Dubinsky along the boards. four on Four for 49 seconds.

17:43: The Michalek minor expires. The Penguins will have a power play for 1:11.

16:31: The Dubinsky minor is killed. The Penguins did little with that chance.

15:57: Drury pumps a slapper from the right circle. Despite a slight screen by Orpik, Fleury snags is with a nice glove save.

14:43: Wolski has a chance in thes lot but his wrister is deflected out of play by Kunitz.

12:11: A wrister by Gaborik from the slot is deflected out of play by Michalek.

10:27: Dupuis used to be a Ranger:

9:38: Avery snaps off a wrister from the top of the slot. Fleury has trouble with it but covers the rebound.

7:48: Del Zotto grips and rips a heavy wrister off a loose puck from the left point wide on the near side.

7:33: With an icing against his club, Dan Bylsma calls time out to give his skaters a rest.

7:14: Big moment here.  Letang is sent off for cross checking Callahan. Jeffrey, Cooke, Michalek and Orpik take the ice.

6:01: Del Zotto pounds a slapper from the top of the slot. Talbot blocks it. Dupuis pushes it up ice to kill time.

5:34: Marc Staal is in deep on the right wing and whisp a wrister on net. Fleury fights it off.

5:14: The Letang minor expires. The Penguins allowed little to the Rangers.

3:38: Letang cranks a slapper from the right point wide on the near side.

3:01: Dupuis blasta  loose puck from just inside the right circle. It gets deflected high.

0:58: Anisimov has a chanc ein tight but Orpik poke checks the puck away from the slot.

0:32: A wrister by Boyle from the right point is deflected wide.

0:15: Talbot chucks a wirster from the top of the slot on net. Lundqvist steers it to the corner.

-Anisimov is up. He moves in, shows forehand then dekes to his backhand and is denied by Fleury's left leg.

-Do or die for Gaborik. He goes to the right moves in and snaps off a wrister. Fleury's left leg says no. End of shootout. Penguins 1, Rangers 0.

-What a gutsy win. The Penguins were reeling in terms of personnel They were without their two best players. They lost their replacement No. 1 center in thhe morning skate.  They lost their third best center midway through the game. They lost another fourth-line forward early in the game. They had a decided disadvantage in terms of power play time. They had every reason to drop this game. But they refused.

-There's probably some motivational saying about the idea of opportunity we could cite regarding Dustin Jeffrey, but we're too lazy to look it up. Regardless, he had it. He took it. He proved to the coaching staff and management that he belongs at this level. He created two scoring chances in regulation and won the game in the shootout. Beyond that, he filled in on the power play, the penalty kill and held his own in the faceoff circle.

-Marc-Andre Fleury was excellent in this game. With the other core players out of the lineup, he stepped up his game and got into a staring contest with another all-star goaltender in Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist blinked.

-The Penguins' special teams were huge. They cashed in on one power play which got them on the board, and they limited the Rangers to one goal on five power play chances. And that goal came at the end of a five-minute major.

-Speaking of which, Jordan Staal was automatically suspended for tomorrow's game against the Rangers pending a review by league officials. No word on when that review will take place.

-The Rangers led in shots, 29-26.

-Stepan led the game with five.

-Adams, Talbot, and Kunitz each led the Penguins with three.

-Girardi led the game with 26:08 of ice time.

-Letang led the Penguins with 25:25.

-The Rangers dominated faceoffs, 38-25 (60 percent).

-Dubinsky was 15 for 19 (79 percent).

-Jeffrey was 9 for 19 (47 percent).

-Martin and Sauer each led the game with three blocked shots.

-Talbot had his 50th career assist and 99th career point. He moved ahead of Blair Chapman and Dupuis for 80th place on the team's all-time scoring list. All three have 99 points but Talbot (49) has more goals than Chapman (48) and Dupuis (42).

-Kunitz (85 points) moved past Cooke (83) for 96th place on the team's all-time scoring list.
