Twenty Years Later - Moscow Dynamo 4, Penguins 3 - 01-12-11
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2010-11 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1990-91 season which led to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. We will look back on games on a particular date and catch up with former players, coaches, executives and media members who were a part or around that team.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-3 loss to Moscow Dynamo, Jan. 12, 1991.
The Penguins hosted the Moscow Dynamo of the Soviet League in an exhibition game at the Civic Arena. Left winger Bob Errey gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal against goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov 15:48 into the game. Defenseman Zarley Zalapski recorded the lone assist.
Moscow Dynamo responded at the 1:46 mark of the second when center Alexei Zhamnov scored against goaltender Wendell Young. The only assist went to left winger Andrei Lomakin.
The Penguins regained the lead at 5:56 of the period when center Jiri Hrdina scored on a power play. Right winger Joe Mullen and center John Cullen recorded assists.
A goal by right winger Scott Young at at 13:14 put the Penguins up 3-1. Center Randy Gilhen had the lone assist.
At 3:21: of the third period, defenseman Ravil Yakubov scored against goaltender Frank Pietrangelo. Assists went to center Igor Korolev and right winger Roman Ilyin.
Less than two minutes later at 5:19, center Alexander Semak scored to tie the game, 3-3. Assists went to left winger Yuri Leonov and Right winger Andrei Kovalev.
Late in the game at 17:43, Lomakin netted the winning goal off assists from Zhamnov and right winger Alexander Andrijevski.
Notes:
-Pietrangelo was credited with the loss after making 10 saves.
-The three stars were 1.) Yakubov 2.) Errey 3.) Zhamnov.

-Guard Brian Shorter had 23 point and led Pitt to 101-82 rout of Providence at the Fitzgerald Field House.
-Running back Thurman Thomas ran for 117 yards and two touchdown for the Bills who beat the Dolphins, 44-34 in an AFC divisional playoff game at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.
-Quarterback Joe Montana threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns for the 49ers in a 28-10 defeat in the NFC divisional playoffs of the Redskins at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
-The Senate voted 52-47 to empower President George H.W. Bush to use the United States' military in order to expel Iraq's invading forces from Kuwait. The House of Representatives approved the motion as well witha 250-183 vote.
