Penguins

-Happy 38th birthday to former Penguins forward Ed Patterson. A seventh-round pick in 1991, Patterson spent parts of three seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 1993-94, Patterson played in 27 games and scored four points.  In 1994-95, Patterson saw action in 35 games and recorded two assists. His final NHL season was 1996-97 and he was limited to six games and no points. He was released in the 1997 offseason.

-Happy 68th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Bryan "Bugsy" Watson (right). Acquired midway through the 1968-69 season along with George Swarbrick and Tracy Pratt in a deal which sent for Earl Ingarfield, Gene Ubriaco and Dick Mattiussi to the Oakland Seals, Watson spent parts of six seasons with the Penguins. he finished 1968-69 by appearing in 18 games for the Penguins and recording four assists as well as 35 penalty minutes. His first full season in Penguins was 1969-70. He played in 61 games, netted 10 points and led the team with 189 penalty minutes. He played in all 10 of the team's postseason games but failed to record a point. Watson was limited to 43 games, eight points and 119 penalty minutes in 1970-71. He rebounded in 1971-72 by setting career highs in games (75), points (20) and led the league with 212 penalty minutes. He played in four postseason games that spring but failed to record a point. In 1972-73, Watson saw action in 69 games, scored 18 points and once again led the team with 179 penalty minutes. After 38 games, five assists and 137 penalty minutes in 1973-74, Watson was traded to the Blues along with Greg Polis and a draft pick in exchange for Steve Durbano, Ab DeMarco Jr. and Bob Kelly. In 304 regular season games with the Penguins, Watson scored 65 points and accumulated 871 penalty minutes, fourth-most in franchise history. Watson, who at one time, was the NHL's all-time leader in penalty minutes, currently owns Bugsy's Pizza Restaurant & Sports Bar in Arlington, Va.

-Happy 41st birthday to former Penguins defenseman Greg Andrusak. A fifth-round pick in 1988, Andrusak spent parts of four seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 1993-94, he saw action in three games and failed to record a point. During the 1994-95 campaign, Andrusak played in seven games and recorded four assists. In 1995-96, Andrusak only appeared in two games and didn't net a point. After spending all of 1996-97 with EHC Eisbaren Berlin in Germany, he returned to the Penguins in 1998-99. That season saw him play in seven games and record one assist. He did appear in 12 postseason games that spring and scored one goal. In the 1999 offseason, he joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent. In 19 regular season games with the Penguins, Andrusak recorded five assists.

Atlantic Division

-Claude Giroux and Mike Richards each had two goals for the Flyers in a 5-2 defeat of the Panthers. Teammates Ville Leino and Kimmo Timonen each recorded two assists while Sergei Bobrovsky recorded his 10th win by making 34 saves.

-Giroux simply abused Panthers goaltender Scott Clemmensen on this goal:

-The Flyers signed forward Jeff Carter to an 11-year contract extension worth $58 million. His salary cap hit will be $5.27 million. Carter was scheduled to become a restricted free agent after this season.

Northeast Divison

-Two goals by Thomas Vanek, including one in overtime, gave the Sabres a 3-2 win against the Capitals. Former Penguin Jordan Leopold had assists on all three of Buffalo's goals while Ryan Miller returned to the lineup after missing six games and made 23 saves in the victory. Fire Ray Shero.

-After seven losses, the Sabres finally got their first home win of the season.

-Prior to the game, Sabres forward Mike Grier was honored for appearing in his 1,000th career NHL game:

-Tomas Plekanec had a goal and three assists for the Canadiens in a 7-3 rout of the Hurricanes. Mike Cammalleri, Brian Gionta and Andrei Kostitsyn each added a goal and an assist for Montreal while teammates Scott Gomez and Jaroslav Spacek each recorded two assists. Carey Price made 28 saves in hte victory. Jussi Jokinen and Eric Staal each had two assists for Carolina.

-Carolina's Justin Peters had issues with this puck:

-Brian Elliott made 31 saves and led the Senators to a 2-0 shutout of the Bruins. Boston Tim Thomas made 31 saves as well but suffered his first loss of the season.

-Bruins forward and former Penguin Mark Recchi recorded his 1,000th career point by fighting Ottawa's Chris Campoli:

-Say what you will about Ottawa's Chris Neil, but he's a tough dude. He got the better of Boston captain Zdeno Chara here:

-Ottawa's Nick Foligno > Boston's Milan Lucic:

-The Sabres demoted goaltender Jhonas Enroth to Portland of the AHL.

-Bruins forward David Krejci resumed skating for the first time since suffering a concussion last Saturday.

-Daron Richardson, the 14-year-old daughter of Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson committed suicide.

Southeast Division

-Panthers forward Steve Bernier underwent surgery to repair a broken orbital bone. He was butt-ended in the face Friday by Minnesota's Brent Burns (See note below.).

Central Division

-Cal O'Reilly's shootout goal gave the Predators a 4-3 win against the Blackhawks. Pekke Rinne made 29 saves in the victory. Jack Skille led Chicago with two goals in regulation.

-A goal and an assist by Todd Bertuzzi led the Red Wings to a 3-1 win against the Avalanche. Jimmy Howard made 21 saves in the victory.

-The Blue Jackets demoted forward Mike Blunden to Springfield of the AHL.

Northwest Division

-Two goals by Ryan Kesler helped the Canucks win at Toronto, 5-3. Mason Raymond and Daniel Sedin each added a goal and an assist for Vancouver while teammates Alexander Edler, Mikael Samuelsson and Henrik Sedin each recorded two assists. Roberto Luongo made 29 saves in the victory. Mikhail Grabovski led Toronto with a goal and an assist.

-Wild defenseman Brent Burns was suspended two games for butt-ending Bernier in the face Friday.

Pacific Division

-Two goals and an assist by Anze Kopitar helped the Kings beat the Islanders, 5-1. Dustin Brown and Drew Doughty each contributed a goal and an assist for Los Angeles while teammate Jack Johnson recorded two assists. Jonathan Quick made 18 saves in the win. The Kings set a franchise record with their eighth consecutive home win to start the season. The Islanders have lost 10 consecutive games.

-A hat trick and two assists by Ray Whitney led the Coyotes to a 5-3 defeat of the Blues. Radim Vrbata added a goal and two assists for Phoenix while teammate Keith Yandle recorded two assists. Ilya Bryzgalov made 35 saves in the win. Andy McDonald led St. Louis with a goal and two assists.

-Ryane Clowe, Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski each had a goal and two assists for the Sharks in a 4-3 defeat of the Flames. Antti Niemi made 28 saves in the victory. Jarome Iginla and Mark Giordano each recorded a goal and an assist for Calgary.

Patrick Division

-Four assists by Nathan Longpre helped the Robert Morris men's team beat Sacred Heart, 5-1.

-A goal and an assist by Steven Cameron led the Mercyhurst men's team to a 4-1 defeat of Army.

-Kristen DiCiocco made 19 saves for the Robert Morris women's team in a 4-1 loss to Wayne State.
