Penguins

-Jordan Staal is expected to speak to the media today for the first time since training camp began (PG+).

-Hopefully you held off on pre-ordering that Brett Sterling jersey.

-Keven Veilleux and Geoff Walker scored goals for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 5-2 preseason loss to the Syracuse Crunch.

Atlantic Division

-Marian Gaborik and Derek Stepan each had a goal and an assist for the Rangers in a 5-1 defeat of the Red Wings. Former Penguin Ruslan Fedotenko contributed two assist while Henrik Lundqvist (above) made 35 saves in the victory. Fire Ray Shero.

-Jeff Carter had two goals for the Flyers in a 3-1 win against the Islanders. Teammate Ville Leino added two assists for Philadelphia while Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves in the victory. The Islanders were a slit-squad. Their other team played against the Flames in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

-Philadelphia's Daniel Carcillo and New York's Travis Hamonic had issues:

-Bobrovsky didn't keep his eyes on this puck:

-The Devils demoted goaltender Jeff Frazee to Albany of the AHL and returned defenseman Eric Gelinas (Chicoutimi - QMJHL) to his junior team. Also forward Marcus Nilson, in camp on a tryout basis, left the team.

-The new logo for the Connecticut Whale, the future name of the Hartford Wolfpack, AHL affiliate of the Rangers, was unveiled:

-Meh... we're kind of indifferent towards it. We've seen better. We've seen worse.

Northeast Division

-Nazem Kadri (above, right, with Phil Kessel) had two goals and an assist for the Maple Leafs who edged the rival Senators, 4-3. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 22 saves in the victory. Chris Campoli led Ottawa with a goal and an assist.

-Senators forward and former Penguin Alex Kovalev thought it would be a good idea to fight Toronto's Francois Beauchemin. Unfortunately for Kovalev, so did Beauchemin:

-It was a rough night for Kovalev who got dumped by Toronto's Mike Komisarek as well:

-Kadri may have saved his chances to make the Maple Leafs' NHL roster.

-Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn is dealing with a back ailment.

-Canadiens forward Brian Gionta was officially named the 28th captain in team history.

-The Habs put out this pretty cool video showing their former and current captains:

-The Bruins demoted forwards Joe Colborne, Zach Hamill, Jeff LoVecchio, Jeremy Reich, Wyatt Smith, a former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguin, and defensemen Steven Kampfer to Providence of the AHL.

-Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta is dealing with a neck ailment.

-The Sabres demoted forwards Jacob Lagace, Maxime Legault, Dennis McCauley, Brian Roloff, Felix Schutz, Colin Stuart, Corey Tropp, Travis Turnbull, Derek Whitmore, defensemen Alex Biega, Tim Conboy and Nick Crawfordwere to Portland of the AHL and returned forward Marcus Foligno (Sudbury - OHL and defenseman Brayden McNabb (Kootenay - WHL) to their junior teams. Stuart, Conboy and Whitmore must go through waivers.

-The Senators demoted goaltenders Mike Brodeur, Barry Brust, defensemen André Benoit, Eric Gryba, Geoff Kinrade and Craig Schira, forwards Jason Bailey, Erik Condra, Corey Cowick, Kaspars Daugavins, David Dziurzynski, Colin Greening, Mike Hoffman, Jim O’ Brien, Tim Spencer and Roman Wick to Binghamton of the AHL.

Southeast Division

-Two goals from Nicklas Backstrom (above) helped the Capitals defeat the Bruins, 4-1. Teammate Jason Chimera added two assists while Braden Holtby made 13 saves to earn the victory.

-Happy times for Washington's Andrew Gordon (right) and Karl Alzner:

-Washington's Matt Hendricks and Boston's Gregory Campbell had issues:

-Washington's John Erskine looked Holtby straight in the eye and told him to get a new jersey number:

-Capitals goaltender and former Penguin Dany Sabourin got down low for this puck:

-We think.

-The Capitals recalled Holtby from Hershey of the AHL earlier in the day.

-Washington loaned forward/salary cap dead weight Michael Nylander to the Rochester Americans, the AHL affiliate of the Panthers. The move takes Nylander's $3 million salary off the Capitals' books.

-The NBA fined Capitals/Wizards owner Ted Leonsis $100,000 for comments regarding that league's salary structure.

-The Hurricanes demoted forward Zach Boychuk to the Charlotte of the AHL.

-The Lightning put forwards Marc Pouliot and Niklas Persson on waivers.

Central Division

-Martin Erat had two goals and an assist for the Predators in a 4-3 win at Atlanta. Ryan Suter added a goal and an assist for Nashville while teammate Aaron Johnson contributed two assists. Anders Lindback (above) made 25 saves in the victory. Johnny Oduya led the Thrashers with two assists.

-The Blue Jackets demoted forwards Matt Calvert, Chad Kolarik, Trevor Frischmon, defensemen Jonathan Sigalet, Steven Delisle, Cody Goloubef, Brent Regner, Theo Ruth and goaltender Daren Machesney to Syracuse of the AHL and returned Oliver Gabriel (Portland -WHL) to his junior team. Frischmon and Sigalet must clear waivers.

-The Red Wings demoted defensemen Travis Ehrhardt, Sergei Kolosov, Sebastien Piche, Logan Pyett, forwards Willie Coetzee, Ilari Filppula, Jamie Tardif and goaltender Thomas McCollum to Grand Rapids of the AHL and released defenseman Greg Amadio and forward Aaron Downey.

-The Blackhawks got their Stanley Cup championship rings:

-The Predators' locker room at Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville is still undergoing repairs for damage sustained from floods this past spring.

Northwest Division

-Shootout goals by Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky gave the Oilers a 4-3 win against the Coyotes. Alex Plante led Edmonton with two assists in regulation while Martin Gerber made 18 saves to earn the victory. Scottie Upshall led Phoenix with a goal and an assist.

-Edmonton's Gilbert Brule was caught among some non-friendlies here:

-Edmonton's Craig MacDonald looks like he's trying out for Icecapades here:

-Phoenix's Vernon Fiddler had issues with Edmonton's Taylor Chorney:

-Miikka Kiprusoff made 14 saves for Flames in a 3-2 win against the Islanders in Saskatoon.

-Flames forward Olli Jokinen is dealing with a back ailment.

-The Avalanche demoted defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk and forward Mike Carman to Lake Erie of the AHL.

-Would-be Penguins defenseman Dan Hamhuis is already pretty popular with his new teammates in Vancouver.

Pacific Division

-Andreas Lilja, Joe Pavelski and Dany Heatley each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks in a 6-2 rout of the Canucks. Devin Setoguchi and Joe Thornton each added two assists for San Jose while Antero Niittymaki made 19 saves in the victory. Raffi Torres scored both of Vancouver's goals.

-San Jose's Mike Moore and Vancouver's Guillaume Desbiens had issues:

-We don't know why, but Canucks forward Darcy Hordichuk's face cracks us up here:

Smythe Division

-Former Red Wings/Sabres/Thrashers forward Slava Kozlov has joined CSKA Moscow of the KHL.

-Former Blues forward Mike Glumac has joined Adler Mannheim in Germany.
