Penguins

-The Penguins are downplaying tonight's match-up with the Blackhawks.

-Ryan Craig is still dealing with an ailing groin (PG+).

-Steelers fan Mike Rupp speaks:

-Sports Illustrated came out with a brilliant list of the best players to ever wear a certain jersey number from No. 00 (John Davidson) to No. 99 (Wayne Gretzky). One-time members of the Penguins include (PG+):

-Jimmy Rixner of Pensburgh took in Saturday's game.

-Preservation Pittsburgh handed out awards for ideas on reusing the Civic Arena.

-Happy 65th birthday to former Penguins defenseman John Arbour. Acquired along with Jean Pronovost during the 1968 offseason in a deal which sent cash to Boston, Arbour's Penguins career amounted to 17 games and two assists in 1968-69. In the 1969 offseason, Arbour was traded to Vancouver of the WHL along with Paul Andrea and Andy Bathgate in exchange for Bryan Hextall, Jr.

Atlantic Division

-The Rangers demoted defensemen Wade Redden, forwards Dane Byers, Evgeny Grachev, Kris Newbury, Dale Weise, Jeremy Williams, Mats Zuccarello and goaltender Chad Johnson, a former Penguins prospect, to Hartford of the AHL and released defensemen Garnet Exelby, Brandon Manning and Alexei Semenov.

-What do the Rangers ultimately do with Redden (right)?

-The Devils placed forwards Brad Mills, Patrick Davis, Tim Sestito, Stephen Gionta, Chad Wiseman, defensemen Olivier Magnan-Grenier and goaltender Mike McKenna on waivers.

-Islanders forward and former Penguins prospect Matt Moulson acknowledged his responsibility for the hit in practice which led to the serious shoulder injury of teammate Mark Streit.

-The Islanders have brought unrestricted free agent forwards Jed Ortmeyer, formerly of the Sharks, Dean McAmmond, formerly of the Devils, Krys Kolanos, a former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguin, goaltender Manny Legace, formerly of the Hurricanes and Joel Martin to training camp on a tryout basis.

-The Islanders returned forward Kirill Kabanov (Moncton - OHL) to his junior team.

-There seems to be some confusion in the Flyers' camp over the back injury of Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton.

-Former Penguins forward Bill Guerin isn't necessarily guaranteed a roster spot with the Flyers.

Northeast Division

-Phil Kessel and Nikolai Kulemin each had two goals for the Maple Leafs who edged the rival Sabres, 5-4. Teammates Dion Phaneuf, Clarke MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski each recorded two assists while Jonas Gustavsson made 35 saves in the victory. Drew Stafford led Buffalo with a goal and two assists.

-Toronto forward and former Penguin Tim Brent wasn't exactly subtle when he approached teammate Carl Gunnarson about his personal hygiene:

- A goal and two assists by Mike Cammalleri led the Canadiens to a 6-2 rout of the Panthers. Tomas Plekanec added two goals for Montreal while teammate Lars Eller recorded three assists. Carey Price made 19 saves in the victory. David Booth and Stephen Weiss each had a goal and an assist for Florida.

-Montreal's Ryan White and Florida's Mike Duco had issues:

-After giving up an early goal, some fans in Montreal began to boo Price but were quickly drowned out by chants of "Ca-rey! Ca-rey!"

-The Sabres returned forwards Riley Boychuk (Portland - WHL), Cedrick Henley (Val d’Or - QMJHL), Steven Shipley (Niagara - OHL), Kevin Sundher (Chilliwack - WHL), Gregg Sutch (Mississauga - OHL), defensemen Corey Fienhage (Kamloops - WHL), Jerome Gauthier-Leduc (Rouyn-Noranda - QMJHL), Matt MacKenzie (Calgary - WHL) and Mark Pysyk (Edmonton - WHL) and released goaltender Zane Kalemba.

-In order to give starter Ryan Miller a lighter workload, the Sabres are expected to used former Penguins goaltender Patrick Lalime (right) a bit more this season.

-The Canadiens demoted defensemen Neil Petruic, Kyle Klubertanz, Brendon Nash, Frédéric St-Denis, David Urquhart, Sébastien Bisaillon, Marc-Antoine Desnoyers, forwards Alexander Avtsin, James T. Wyman, Jimmy Bonneau, Andrew Conboy, Dany Massé, Olivier Fortier, Ian Schultz, Aaron Palushaj and goaltender Robert Mayer to Hamilton of the AHL and returned forward Louis Leblanc (Montreal - QMJHL) and defenseman Jarred Tinordi (London - OHL) to their junior teams.

-With Marc Savard (head) out indefinitely, the Bruins need to find another top-six center.

-Maple Leafs forward Kris Vertseeg Versteeg (right), a member of the Blackhawks' championship team last season, had his name mispelled on the Stanley Cup.

Southeast Division

-The Capitals signed  forward Matt Hendricks, in camp on a tryout basis, to a two-way contract and demoted forwards Francois Bouchard, Kyle Greentree, Brian Willsie, defensemen Sean Collins, Grant McNeill, Zach Miskovic to Hershey of the AHL.

-HBO is already filming some stuff with the Capitals for "24/7."

-The Panthers demoted forwards Bill Thomas, a former Penguin, Triston Grant, Scott Timmins, Mike Duco, Evgeny Dadonov and goaltender Tyler Plante to Rochester of the AHL and returned forward Quinton Howden (Moose Jaw- WHL) to his junior team.

-The Thrashers demoted forwards Riley Holzapfel, Spencer Machacek and former Penguins defenseman Noah Welch to Chicago of the AHL and placed forward Patrice Cormier (foot) on injured reserve.

-Former Penguins forward Jeff Daniels (right) is running Carolina's new AHL affiliate in Charlotte.

Central Division

-A goal and an assist by Shea Weber led the Predators to a 2-1 defeat of the Thrashers. Pekka Rinne made 21 saves in the win.

-The Blackhawks demoted forwards Evan Brophey and Jeff Taffe, a former Penguin, to Rockford of the AHL and loaned goaltender Cristobal Huet to Fribourg-Gotteron SA in Switzerland. The Huet move clears his $5.625 salary cap hit off the Blackhawks' books.

-The Predators demoted forward Blake Geoffrion to Milwaukee of the AHL.

-Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

-The Blues demoted defensemen Dean Arsene, Brennan Evans, forwards Adam Cracknell, Graham Mink, Ryan Reaves, Brett Sonne and  David Spina to Peoria of the AHL.

-For some strange reason, Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel isn't crazy about having his captain Rick Nash fight.

Northwest Division

-With back up goaltender Josh Harding (knee) seriously injured, the Wild is kicking the tires on unrestricted free agent goaltender Jose Theodore (right), formerly of the Capitals.

-The Wild demoted forwards Cody Almond, Colton Gillies, Carson McMillan, Chad Rau, defensemen Tyler Cuma, Jamie Fraser, Maxim Noreau, Nate Prosser, Jared Spurgeon and goaltender Matt Hackett to Houston of the AHL and placed forwards Jon DiSalvatore, Robbie Earl, Peter Kalus and Warren Peters on waivers.

-The Oilers demoted defensemen Johan Motin, Jake Taylor and forward Teemu Hartikainen to Oklahoma City of the AHL, placed forwards Brad Moran and Greg Stewart on waivers and released forward Jared Aulin.

-The Canucks demoted defensemen Nolan Baumgartner, a former Penguin, Kevin Connauton, Evan Oberg, Chris Tanev, Sean Zimmerman and D Travis Ramsey, forwards Mario Bliznak, Prab Rai, Jordan Schroeder and Aaron Volpatti to Manitoba of the AHL.

-Vancouver is still trying to find a replacement for injured forward Alex Burrows (right) on its top line.

-The Flames demoted defenseman John Negrin, Keith Seabrook and goaltender Matt Keetley to Abbotsford of the AHL and placed defenseman Gord Baldwin on waivers.

Pacific Division

-If you can imagine such a thing, Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen is dealing with a groin injury.

-For the second consecutive season, the Sharks are looking for a new captain.

-The Kings demoted defenseman Andrew Campbell, Johan Fransson, Alec Martinez and forward Oscar Moller to Manchester of the AHL.

-The Coyotes demoted defensemen Jonas Ahnelov, Garrett Stafford, Michael Stone, Chris Summers, Nolan Yonkman, forwards Matt Beaudoin, Ryan Hollweg, Bracken Kearns, Josh Lunden, Brett MacLean, Alexander Picard, Blair Riley, goaltenders Matt Climie and Al Montoya to San Antonio of the AHL and returned defenseman Brandon Gormley (Moncton - QMJHL) to his junior team.

Norris Division
