Winter Classic press conference - 07-27-10

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

The press conference was held today for the Winter Classic at Heinz Field. Not a lot of real news came out of it.

Probably the most newsworthy note was the unveiling of the game's and the team's logos:

For a better look:

We dig the game's logo. It invokes a prevalant of a Pittsburgh trait - a bridge.

We're not crazy about the Penguins bringing back the Humpty-Dumpty-esque Penguin with a scarf. It was the team's orginal logo in 1967 but they never actually wore it on their jerseys. Instead, they had a diagonal P-I-T-T-S-B-U-R-G-H across the chest of their jerseys.

We do like the Capital's choice of bringing back the Yvon Labre era red and blue look. Not that they have a lot of choices, but this is much better than the black and copper Olaf Kolzig era look.

A few shots from today's even under a baking sun:

NBC/Versus announcer Mike "Doc" Emrick emceed the event:

Lots of folks spoke today but really said little of substance. Mario Lemieux was on hand and didn't speak. Team president David Morehouse, Steelers owner Art Rooney II, Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Capitals president Dick Patrick, the cousin of former Penguins general manager Craig Patrick, all spoke.

Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis and Maxime Talbot of the Penguins David Steckel and Mike Knuble of the Capitals spoke in scrums.

If anything, the only interesting quote today came from Talbot earlier this morning on WXDX-FM when he compared Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin to a femine hygiene product. He did a little backtracking afternoon off of that remark.

Goals were set up in the approximate locations they will be for the game. This is the south goal:

Talbot, Crosby and Dupuis posed with sticks, helmets and footballs:

For a photo opportunity, they had all five players shoot pucks from the field through the uprights in the south end zone. Knuble:

-Steckel:

-Dupuis:

-Dupuis actually ripped his first shot into the net about 20 yards away and began to celebrate to laughter.

-Talbot:

-Crosby:

-One of Crosby's shots was totally off the mark and actually clunked off a helmet laying in the field.

-The rink will approximately be set between the 20-yard marks on the field. A shadow mock-up of the rink was set up:

-Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post has a much better picture of the "rink:"
