Josef Beranek is standing by

The Rangers are just in love with those former Penguins of Czech descent. After parting ways with Jaromir Jagr and Martin Straka this offseason, there now comes news that the Rangers are going to give Petr Nedved a tryout.

Nedved spent last season with Sparta Praha after having spent the 2006-07 season with the Oilers, the Flyers and the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL affiliate.

It's hard to imagine Nedved still having something to offer an NHL team as a first- or even second- liner and according to the Czech news outlets the report is based on, Nedved has no such expectations. He is hoping to reach the team as a third- or fourth-liner.

We are concerned about Rangers overlord Glen Sather though. What is with him and former Penguins from the Czech Republic? Why does he have some weird fixation on them? He still has Michal Rozsival under wraps.  Should Jiri Slegr get a restraining order? Will the Hrdinas, Jiri and Jan, need to hire a bodyguard anytime they holiday in New York? Has Sather rummaged through Milan Kraft's trash? Will Petr Sykora be at risk when his contract with the Penguins runs out after this upcoming season? Has anyone even seen Josef Beranek within in the last six months?

Sather's sick fetishes aside, we do wish Nedved the best in his pursuit of landing on the Rangers' roster for the third time in his career. If nothing else, during Rangers-Penguins games, Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey will be forced to break up their 4,234 "the Staals are brothers" calls with occasional mentions of a certain late night in Landover, Md. in the spring of 1996.
