Melrose fired - 11-14-08

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

The Lighting fired coach Barry Melrose and replaced him with assistant coach and former Penguins forward Rick Tocchet. The Lightning is 5-7-4.

EN Says: Did the Lightning's new owners every seriously think this would work out? Melrose has been out of coaching for over a decade and he wasn't that good of a coach back in the 1990s with the Kings. Additionally, their approach with building a team was too much for any coach, let alone one with Melrose's meager credentials, to turn into an instant winner. As we saw here with the 2005-06 Penguins, You can't just grab whatever talent is on the free agent market, throw it together and hope that it meshes right off the bat. Players need time to develop chemistry.

We doubt things will go much better for Tocchet. He has the same group of unfamiliar players to work with and this franchise's problems are a lot bigger than the head coaching position.

No word yet if the Lighting's owners have issued any Southeast Division title predictions as of late.
