Penguins at Red Wings - Game 5 - Pregame - 6-6-09

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

Hey, guess were we are. Again.

Detroit Rock City. In case you're wondering, we're sparing your hard drive too many "around town" shots of Detroit on account of our lack of familiarity with the turf and the fact that its... you  know... Detroit. In any case, here's the evil corporate headquarters of General Motors:

-A replica (not a lifelike one we assume) of Joe Louis' fist:

-Some Penguins fans out front:

-Some yinzers are here sporting the t-shirts made in honor of fallen Pittsburgh Police Officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Scuillo:

-Some Penguins fans sporting a pair of 2006-07 Marc-Andre Flery and Sidney Crosby jerseys:

-Some Red Wings fan being rather protective of his mollusk:

-There's a party out back on the riverwalk. Penguins fans have invaded:

-We've always said Terrible Towels are acceptable at any Pittsburgh sporting event. They aren't a Steelers thing anymore in our book. They're a Pittsburgh. And when you thrown in the fact they support the Allegheny Valley School, there's no reason you can't bring one to a Penguins game:

-That band is really captivating its audience:

-The only known patch of grass in Detroit has been ruined:

-Some Capitals fans are here apparently:

-The Detroit River and Windsor:

-Penguins fans in back:

-Rob Brown has at least one fan here:

-We can't tell you enough how much we love this 30-year-old dump. The ceilings and pipes in the concourse are exposed:

-All the pillars have pictures of former Red Wings like Gordie Howe:

-The steps:

-The seats all have stains on them:

-And the view isn't too shabby:

-It's not Gate 3 at Mellon Arena, but WDVE-FM is holding a vieiwing party at Diesel on the South Side.

-At about 6:51 p.m., this random "LET'S GO PENS!" chant started. It got pretty loud too despite the fact that the building probably wasn't even two percent filled. It lingered for about 30 seconds before the few Red Wings fans in here booed it down.

-Some sights around the old barn. A Mike Vernon Red Wings jersey:

-Holy heck. Noah Welch:

-A 1920 Team Canada jersey:

-Mickey Redmond:

This had to be a clearance rack purchase. Philippe Boucher:

-Dominic Moore Maple Leafs:

-This gentleman is sporting a California Golden Seals Rick Hampton jersey:

(No jersey foul on account of the defunct franchises clause.)

-We'll let this jersey foul slide on account of it being a road game and Troy Polomalu doing fairly well in his championship game this year:

-The towels being given out:

-The Winnipeg Jets are a force in this series. Teemu Selanne:

-Ulf Samuelsson:

-Ken Wregget:

-This was the area around the Penguins' bench around 7:20 p.m.:

-This was the area around the Red Wings' bench at 6:21 p.m.:

-Jersey foul. A Steven Stamkos Lightning jersey has no place here:

-Major jersey foul. A Brendan Shanahan Red Wings jersey with cutoff sleeves?

-Steve Yzerman Cambell Conference All-Star:

-Jaromir Jagr:

-Warm ups:

-All of the Red Wings' dinged up players took the skate, including Justin Adbelkader who is battling the "flu."

-Pavel Datsyuk and Dan Cleary are both in. Detroit's scratches are Abdelkader, Derek Meech, Ville Leino, Chris Chelios, Darren McCarty, Aaron Downey, Jakub Kindl, Tomas Kopecky and Jimmy Howard.

-The Penguins' scratches are Chris Minard, Alex Goligoski, the great Mike Zigomanis, Petr Sykora, Jeff Taffe, Eric Godard, Dustin Jeffrey, Philippe Boucher, Ben Lovejoy and John Curry.

-Marc-Andre Fleury and Chris Osgood are your starting goaltenders.

-The Penguins' starting lineup is announced. Each name gets booed. Evgeni Malkin's is booed the loudest.

-The National Anthem along with a color guard in honor of the 65th anniversary of D-Day:

-Click here for the first period.
