Red Wings at Penguins - Game 6 - First Period - 6-09-09

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

19:55: "LET'S GO PENS! LET'S GO PENS!"

19:21: Bill Guerin tosses a wrister net from the neutral zone. Osgood fights it off.

19:00: The Penguins have Guerin on a line with Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby.

18:24: Johan Franzen gets mashed to the ice by Sergei Gonchar along the boards.

18:17: Crosby gets a chance in tight, tries to move to his backhand from the side of the cage but can't control the puck.

16:35: Pavel Datsyuk dishes a feed into the slot for Zetterberg. Zetterberg rips a wrister. Fleury punches away the rebound with his blocker. Huuuge save.

16:25: Zetterberg is finally sent off for interference. Malkin, Crosby, Gonchar, Guerin and Letang are on for the power play. The Penguins need a goal.

15:51: Guerin gets a chance just to the right of the cage and tries to jam it in. Osgood closes the gates. Guerin gets hit from behind into the cage and knocks it loose. Replays just showed Jordan Staal actually hitting Zetterberg into Fleury. The Penguins got a break there.

15:16: Crosby dishes a pass to Gonchar at the right point. Gonchar hammers a one-timer. Malkin appears to actually block it. A mad scramble ensues. The Penguins can't get on by Osgood.

14:32: Fleury plays a puck behind his net and all heck breaks loose. A Detroit player steals it and the Red Wings have a few chances but can't get a shot off. Fleury has absolutely regressed as a stickhandler.

14:25: Zetterberg's penalty is killed. The Penguins had a few chances there.

12:32: Zetterberg carries the puck up ice out of his zone. Near the red line, Malkin makes a nice effort on a backcheck and takes it right him.

12:20ish: Malkin moves in on a defender, shoots and has his shot blocked. Malkin pursues the puck into the corner but the defender basically runs a pass-blocking drill on him and holds him up. No call.

11:54: Guerin streaks down the right wing against Brian Rafalski, makes this little delayed move, gets a step to the outside and rips a wrister right into Osgood's chest. Osgood fights the puck off.

11:14: Guerin chugs up the right wing and rips a wrist shot high. Osgood gloves it. Guerin's really playing inspired early on here.

10:34: Ruslan Fedotenko chops a shot on net from the left wing. Osgood fights it off.

10:19: Dan Cleary fires a slapper from the slot. It gets blocked high.

9:52: Kennedy spins off the boards and whips a wrister on net. Osgood has to hop up and defend it. The rebound bounces out to the right faceoff circle where Kennedy jumps on it. Before he shoots he takes a spill. He might've been trying to buy a call there.

8:49: Pascal Dupuis tags Darren Helm along the boards. That ended a sequence of about three nice hits by the Penguins.

6:36: As Guerin moves the puck up ice out of their zone, Filppula trips up Guerin at the blue line. That's two minutes. Gonchar, Crosby, Guerin, Malkin and Letang are on for the power play. The have to convert this.

5:59: Letang zhips a pass into the slot. Guerin is there but can't get a stick on it.

5:40: Crosby enters the zone with speed and snaps off a wrister to the far side. Osgood boots it out.

4:57: As play is blown dead, Helm gives Mark Eaton a love tap in front of the Red Wings' bench. Staal doesn't appreciate that and gives Helm the business.

4:36: Filppula's penalty is killed. Not a lot going on there for the Penguins. They aren't going to win if they can't convert at home.

3:03: "LET'S GO PENS! LET'S GO PENS!"

2:49: After a bad turnover by Detroit in its own end, Eaton picks up a loose puck and cranks a wild slapper no where near the net.

1:37: Chris Kunitz owes Fleury a beer. After a weak turnover by Kunitz, and some nifty stickhandling and passing by Pavel Datsyuk, Fleury slides across his crease and simply robs Dan Cleary on a chance to the left of the cage.

1:10: Malkin flicks a bakchanders from a tough angle on net. Osgood fights it off.

0:18: After Zetterberg and Cleary fail to hook up on a chance near the Penguins' net. Cooke dumps Cleary into the boards with a rough check behind the cage.

0:00: End of period. Penguins 0, Red Wings 0.

FIRST INTERMISSION

-Is anyone else a little concerned that the Penguins didn't get at least one goal there? They played a marvelous period. Generated some chances. Played with urgency and desperation. But they couldn't get a goal. The Red Wings are eventually going to get a few more chances, especially on the power play, and we have a hard time seeing them not converting a few.

-That said, the Penguins had an outstanding period. They were physical and forced the Red Wings in a few turnovers.

-Guerin looked like a guy who realizes he might not have another chance at this.

-Fleury wasn't tested a great deal, but two of Detroit's chances were really nice and he was up to the test.

-It was hard to really tell if Sykora was any better. He only had 1:59 of ice time.

-The Penguins have a 12-3 lead in shots.

-Guerin leads the game with five.

-Zetterberg has two.

-The Red Wings have an 8-5 lead in faceoffs (62 percent).

-Kris Draper is 3 for 4 (75 percent).

-Crosby is 3 for 6 (50 percent).

-Gonchar leads the game with 8:13 of ice time.

-Nicklas Lidstrom leads Detroit with 7:36.

-Niklas Kronwall leads the game with three blocked shots.

-Maxime Talbot leads the Penguins with two.
