Komisarek signs with Maple Leafs - 7-1-09

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

Here's why the Maple Leafs unloaded Pavel Kubina. That cleared some salary and allowed them to sign former Canadiens blueliner Mike Komisarek. The deal is for five years and has a cap hit of $4.5 per season.

Komisarek appeared in 66 games last season and scored 11 points (two goals, nine assists).

EN Says: Komisarek is a very physical defender who fits into Brian Burke's blueprint very well. He can be a little undisciplined, but something tells us coach Ron Wilson will be able to address that.

The cap number is a little high for our tastes. $4.5 million is a lot for a guy who has limited offensive ability and we wouldn't exactly describe Komisarek as a shutdown defender.

The first Maple Leafs-Canadiens game of next season should be really interesting.
