Penguins

-"I'd say we probably lost very little." - Brooks Orpik on the players the Penguins lost this past offseason.

-The Penguins will attempt to be the first team since the 1985 Oilers to reach three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals.

-Sidney Crosby's (above) still dealing with a groin ailment.

-Canada and Russia are trying to claim credit for fixing the Penguins. Ray Shero not impressed.

-Meet the Penguins "protesters" from Thursday's turmoil in Lawrenceville:

-Former Penguins defenseman Cory Cross and former Islanders forward Brad Isbister were named assistant coaches at the University of Calgary.

-The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins got goals from Dustin Jeffrey and Eric Tangradi in a 5-2 preseason loss to the Hershey Bears.

-Happy 51st birthday to former Penguins forward Paul Mulvey who managed to pick up 76 penalty minutes in just 27 career games with the Penguins.

-Happy 72nd birthday to former Penguins forward Wally Boyer (right). He finished fourth in scoring on the 1970-71 Penguins with 41 points (11 goals, 30 assists) while centering a line of Andy Bathgate and Greg Polis.

Atlantic Division

-The Islanders signed defenseman Anton Klementyev to a three-year entry-level contract.

-Martin Brodeur made 21 saves for the Devils in a 1-0 shutout of the Flyers.

Northeast Division

-The Bruins put former Penguins goaltender Dany Sabourin and forward Guillaume Lefebvre on waivers with the hopes of demoting them to Providence of the AHL. Also going through waivers are former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defensemen Drew Fata, Andy Wozniewski and forwards Drew Larman and Trent Whitfield.

-The Sabres re-signed forward Mark Mancari and assigned him to Portland in the AHL along with goaltender Jhonas Enroth, forwards Philip Gogulla, Felix Schutz and defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani. Forward Jeff Cowan and defensemen Joe DiPenta were also demoted pending waivers

-Goals from Carl Gunnarsson and Viktor Stahlberg gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 win against the Red Wings.

-Carey Price made 29 saves for the Canadiens in a 3-2 defeat of the Sabres.

Southeast Division

-The Thrashers demoted forwards Joey Crabb, Jason Krog, Spencer Machacek, Tim Stapleton, defensemen Arturs Kulda, Grant Lewis, Paul Postma. Mike Vernace and goaltender Drew McIntyre to Chicago of the AHL.

-The Lightning demoted goaltenders Riku Helenius, Jaroslav Janus, Dustin Tokarski, forwards Blair Jones, Dana Tyrell, Martins Karsums, Juraj Simek, Paul Szczechura, defensemen Vladimir Mihalik and Ty Wishart to Norfolk of the AHL and returned forward Carter Ashton, a first-round pick in this summer's draft, to his junior team.

-Tampa Bay signed forward James Wright to a three-year entry-level contract.

-A goal and an assist from Eric Staal helped the Hurricanes beat the Predators, 5-2.

Central Division

-A thumb ailment has landed Blues forward D.J. King on injured reserve.

-Derek Dorsett and Raffi Torres each had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets in a 4-2 win at Boston.

-You know the season is near when Bruins play-by-play guy Jack Edwards is over-hyping fights:

-Chris Mason made 29 saves for the Blues in a 5-0 shutout of the Stars.

Northwest Division

-The Wild demoted forwards Danny Irmen, Robbie Earl, Cody Almond and Matt Kassian to Houston of the AHL and returned defenseman Marco Scandella to his junior team.

-Mason Raymond's shootout goal gave the Canucks a 2-1 defeat of the Flames.

Pacific Division

-The Ducks demoted forward Ryan Donally and goaltender Justin Pogge to San Antonio of the AHL and released forward Kyle Calder and Jassen Cullimore from their tryout agreements.

-The Kings demoted defenseman Joe Piskula to Manchester of the AHL.

-Ilya Bryzgalov made 27 saves and led the Coyotes to a 2-0 shutout of the Sharks.

-Two goals from Anze Kopitar helped the Kings beat the Avalanche, 5-3.

Norris Division

-Gary Bettman is pretty much in Versus' corner in its dispute with DirecTV.
