-Hey guess where we are:
-No... not Newark:
-FSN Pittsburgh offers the Penguins' lines:
-We're not crazy about taking Dupuis off the third line. He was fanstastic
-The Penguins' scratches are Eric Godard, Jay McKee and Tyler Kennedy.
-The Devils' scratches are Mark Fraser, Vladimir Zharkov, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Andrew Peters.
-Marc-Andre FLeury and Martin Brodeur are your starters in net.
19:44: Guerin puts a wrister on net from the right wing. Brodeur makes the save.
19:35: Alex Goligoski sneaks a wrister through traffic from the left point. Brodeur boots it out.
18:58: Brodeur shrugs off a shot by Ruslan Fedotenko.
18:28: The great Martin Skoula puts a slapper on net from the left point. Fleury gloves it. Fire Ray Shero.
18:17: Well that didn't take long. ILya Kovalchuk dish a pass to Andy Greene at the right point. Greene blasts a one-timer which is off the mark. It hits off the back board and takes a perfect bounce into the slot. Fleury can't react fast enough. That allow Patrik Elias to jump on the rebound and punch it by Fleury on the blocker side. Green and Kovalchuk get assists. Devil s 1-0.
17:35: And that response didn't take long. Off a give and go with Chris Kunitz, Crosby coasts up the right wing and snaps off a wrister through Brodeur's five hole. That's the Penguins' first goal against Brodeur since the Clinton administration. We thing. Brodeur didn't look good there. Kunitz gets the only assist.
16:35: Guerin strikes a long distance shot from the left point. Brodeur makes the save. There's a scramble for the rebound. Brodeur is able to lunge out and cover it.
16:22: Skoula is nabbed for holding Guerin. That's two minutes. Promote Ray Shero. Goligoski, Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Sergei Gonchar and Guerin take the ice.
15:09: Gonchar strikes a slapper from the top of the slot which is blocked in front.
14:45ish: Alexei Ponikorovsky gets away with some interference against Brodeur.
13:46: Fleury fights off a wraparound chance by Brian Rolston.
12:26: Guerin snaps off a wrister from the left circle. Brodeur boots it out. Guerin looks pretty good on the third line. That's three shots already for Guerin.
11:52: Zach Parise takes a sneak wrister from the left circle the far side. Fleury makes a tough save with his left foot.
11:21: Greene cranks a shot from the slot off the cross bar with Fleury on his back. Missed a chance there.
10:29: Kunitz pumps a slapper on net from the slot. Brodeur boots it out.
10:19: Jamie Langenbrunner puts wrister on net. Fleury makes the glove save. This game is up and down so far. This is very bizarre for a Devils game.
8:31: Ponikarovsky rips a wrister to the far side from the left circle. It clunks off the far post.
7:28: Kovalchuk grisp a rips a wrister from the top of the right circle which gets blocked.
5:56: Guerin is still gunning it. He snaps off a wrister from just above the left circle wide on the near side.
5:20: Colin White chucks a wrister from the left point. It hits a body in front.
3:20ish: Coming back from commercial, Ken Wregget, who we figured over the summer was the third best goaltender in franchise history, get a teaser from Dan Potash.
2:28: Ponikarovsky snaps off a wrister from the left circle. Brodeur juuuuuust get a piece of it with his glove.
1:47: Fedotenko trips up Bryce Salvador along the boards. Jordan Staal, Mark Eaton, Brook soprik and Matt Cooke take the ice
1:27: Kovalchuk controls the puck at the right point and makes a brutal turnover. Cooke takes it right off him and rushes up the ice on a partial breakaway. Kovalchuk is able to track him down and break it up. Langenbrunner is nabbed for interference against Cooke in the process. That gives up a four-on-four for 1:40. What a brutal play by Kovalchuk.
0:41: Malkin lifts a wrister from the left circle. Brodeur fights it off.
0:00: End of period. Devils 1, Penguins 1.
-That was a fairly fun period. Lots of up and down skating. Some sloppy defense. This is strange for a Devils game.
-Bill Guerin is playing with real purpose. The Olympic break and the time off for his wonky back seems to have done wonders for him.
-Pascal Dupuis was a little quiet having been bumped up to the first line.
-Brodeur looks a little shaky. He's give up a few iffy rebounds and the goal he allowed to Crosby wasn't all that sharp.
-Ilya Kovalchuk looks terrible so far.
-The Penguins lead in shots, 13-8.
-Guerin leads the game with four.
-The great Martin Skoula leads the Devils with two. Fire Ray Shero.
-Greene leads the game with 9:29 of ice time.
-Goligoski leads the Penguins with 7:22.
-The Devils have a 10-8 edge in faceoffs (56 percent).
-Dean McAmmond is 3 for 3 (100 percent).
-Crosby is 3 for 6 (50 percent).
-Mike Mottau leads the game with four blocked shots.
-Judging by the photos we've gotten, half of Western Pennsylvania is in Newark. In no particular order, EN commentor missdaburgh, "Krikker," Brian Warcup and Steve King send in some shots. A "Taste of Newark:"
-A taste of Newark includes cigarette ashes right?
-Not only are the Devils boring. They're also uncreative:
-Even the Devils' mascot is unorgininal. His name is "N.J. Devil:"
-Malkinmania is running wild:
-And some poor soul is wearing ugly pajama pants:
-Dupuis was awarded an assist on Crosby's goal.
20:00: We'll have 33 seconds of four-on-four play.
19:47: Fedotenko's penalty is killed. The Penguins will have 20 seconds of power play time.
18:41: Brodeur knocks a slapper by Orpik from the left point dead.
18:22: Kris Letang is nabbed for holding Dainius Zubrus. Craig Adams, Maxime Talbot, Jordan Leopold and Eaton take the ice.
16:59: Kovalchuk sneaks a wrister through traffice onto the net from the right half wall. Fleury knocks it dead and covers the rebound.
16:22: Letang's penalty is killed. The Penguins allowed very little to the Penguins there.
15:50: Skoula rushes back for an iced puck to touch a puck which was touched by a high stick. Just as he touches, Adams rushes in and jabs him in the head a bit with a shoulder. It lookd like he got him mostly shoulder on shoulder though. He did leave his feet a bit. Skoula's a little dazed after the hit. Officials give Adam's a major for charging and a game misconduct!?!? Huh? We understand giving him something for charging but a major and a game misconduct? Wow. That's stunning. Dan Bylsma and company protest. This will be a tough five minutes with Adams, one of their best penalty killers out. Staal, Cooke, Orpik and
15:19: COoke gets looes again up the right wing shorthanded, he pulls up in the right circle and whips a low wrister on net. Brodeur boots it out.
13:44: Anssi Salmela blasts a one-timer fro the right half wall which is totally off the mark.
12:19: Greene cranks a slapper from the left point which is wide on the far side.
11:33: Mottau blasts a slapper from the right half wall but misses the cage.
11:25: Kovalchuk snaps off a wrister which is off the mark.
11:21: Dupuis chops the puck down ice for a big clear.
10:52: Parise gets denied in tight. That essentially kills off the rest of the penalty. What an effort by the Penguins. The Devils looked totally inept with that advantage. Good thing they traded for Kovalchuk.
10:20: Paul Steigerwald explains Skoula suffered a cut on the hit by Adams.
10:15: Brodeur punches away a wrister by Goligoski.
9:46: Leopold chops a slapper from the right point. Brodeur gloves it.
8:50: Rod Pelley cranks a slapper from the left wing. Fleury fights it off.
8:27: Fleury eats up a little half slapper by Pandolfo from the left half wall.
8:15: FSN Pittsburgh shows a good replay of the hit on Skoula. Officials screwed up by calling icing despite the fact Letang had gained the red line. That said, it didn't excuse Adams from leaving his feet.
8:07: Mike Rupp kind of kicks Brodeur in the shoulder as the Devils goaltender covers the puck. Rupp is called for slashing. Staal, Dupuis, Eaton and Gonchar take the ice.
6:34: Fleury eats up a one-timer by Brian Rolston from the right point. Letang and Zubrus mix it up to the right of Fleury and end up cross checking one another. That dispute graduates to a big scrum. Letang and Zubrus each end up with roughing minors.
6:07: The Rupp penalty is killed. Another nice effort by the Penguins.
5:11: Fleury holds out a quick shot by Parise from a tough angle on the right wing.
5:03: Fleury fights off a rising wrister by Elias from the right circle.
4:44: Dan Bylsma calls a timeout to organize a night everyone can come over to watch "Police Academy 2:"
4:36: Another scrum breaks out as Malkin squares off with Rob Niedermayer, Fedotenko and Colin White wrestle and Ponikarovsky squares off with Clarkson. Officials break it up. The Penguins end up with a power play. Malkin and Niedermayer each get roughing minors. Niedermayer also gets a cross checking minor. Fedotenko and White each get 10-minute misconducts. Gonchar, Crosby, Guerin, Goligoski and Kunitz take the ice.
2:46: The Penguins' power play is killed. They did very little with that chance. In fact, they failes to record a shot.
1:50: the puck gets chipped up ice to Kovalchuk who gets behind Letang. He moves in on net. Letang does a nice job to catch up but ends up hooking or slashing Kovalchuk on the right hand. Kovalchuk gets a shot off but can't be Fleury. Offiicals award a penalty shot to Kovalchuk. After a brief delay, he takes the puck at center ice, glides slightly to the left, moves in on net and shoots. Fleury's left leg denies him. What a save.
1:35: Off a turnover, Parise rushes up the right wing and rips a wrister wide on the far side.
1:18: Travis Zajac pounds a slapper from the right wing. Fleury boots it out.
1:07: Crosby sneaks a pass into the slot for Kunitz. Kunitz pushes it on net. Brodeur holds it out. Tough save.
1:00: Kunitz cracks a one-timer from the slot. Brodeur gloves it.
0:00: End of period. As the horn sounds, Niedermayer and Cooke lock up in a scrum. Niedermayer stuck thet butt-end of his stick in Cooke's ear. Boston city council immediately nominates Niedermayer for citizen of hte year. Devils 1. Penguins 1.
-Things settled down a bit. The skating wasn't as open, but that was another fun period of hockey. It had a playoff feel to it in terms of the intesity and flow.
-The goaltending has been strong for each team. Brodeur and Fleury have a staring contest going on right now.
-Hope you're not a fan of power plays. The penalty killing for each team has been strong.
-How huge was that kill on the Adams major?
-The Kovalchuk trade has been underwhelming for the Devils. To be kind.
-The Devils have a 27-20 lead in shots.
-In the second period, the Devils led in shots, 19-7.
-Kovalchuk leads the game with five shots.
-Guerin leads the Peguins with four.
-Paul "The Butcher" Alexander is up to his old tricks with the intermission highlights. Lightning forward Brandon Bochenkski become "Bo-Chow-Skee."
-Greene leads the game with 16:18 of ice time.
-Gonchar leads the Penguins with 15:18.
-The Devils have a 19-17 edge in faceoffs (53 percent).
-McAmmond is 3 for 4 (75 percent).
-Crosby is 7 for 12 (58 percent).
-Mottau leads the game with four blocked shots.
-Orpik leads the Penguins with three.

-And better late than never. EN commentor NCsurveygirl sends in a few shots from last night's game in Carolina:
-A Mike Eruzione jersey:
19:57: And this doesn't take long. Cooke and Niedermayer lock up and fight. After some hesitation, they lock up. Cooke lands a few rights and drops Niedermayer who appeared to just slip. Cooke gets the advantage.
17:54: The Devils break the damn. Kovalchuk whips a wrister on net from the left point. Fleury boots it out and gives up a huge long rebound. Eaton fails to track it down. Andy Greene does and blasts a one-timer which burns Fleury by the glove hand. What a rocket. Put that one on Fleury and Eaton. Fleury can't give up that rebound and Eaton needs to be more urgent with the recovery. Kovalchuk gets the only assist. Devils 2-1.
14:55: Malkin moves in off the
14:34: Talbot gets a chance in the slot and waits a little too long to shoot. He finally does but Salmela blocks it.
14:04: That's a first. Langenbrunner and Kunitz mix it up in front of the Penguins' bench. Langenbrunner drives Kunitz through the open door and they scrum INTO the bench. From the bench, Talbot ties to pull Langenbrunner away. Coaches and officials tell all the players orginally on the bench to steer clear. Dan Bylsma actually pull Malkin back back by his shoulders as Malkin sits down. Really bizare. Offiicals eventually break it up. The Penguins end up with a power play. Kunitz gets a slashing minor. Langenbrunner gets minors for roughing and high sticking. Rod Pelley will serve one of Langenbrunner's minors. Big two minutes here. Gonchar, Goligoski, Malkin, Crosby and Guerin take the ice.
1:39: Goligoski take a pass at the left point. He winds up and puts a slapper on net. Brodeur boots it out.
1:32: Brodeur holds out a little wrister by Crosby from a deep angle on the left wing.
1:14: Rolston calmly taps the puck off fthe boards and out of the Devils' zone.
12:45: Malkin makes a brutal turnover to Zajac who just skates around in the neutral zone eating clock.
12:04: The Penguins' power play is killed. They put some shots on net but were sloppy with the puck at the same time.
11:51: Staal chips a wrister from the right circle. It's high of the net but Brodeur still snags it.
11:25: Off a deflected shot by Dupuis, Talbot quickly whips a wrister on net from the left wing. Brodeur is able to boot it away.
10:01: Kovalchuk corrals a puck at the top of the slot, grips and rips a wrister which beats Fleury by his glove hand. Fleury immediatley tracks down an official and protests. It looks like FLeury might be protesting interference by Zajac. After a brief delay, the goal is confirmed. A replay shows Zajac definitely pushing away Fleury's glove with his stick. The officials blew that one. The play is not reviewable either. Zubrus gets the only assist. Bill McCreary deserves one too. Devils 3-1.
7:30: Fleury fights off a deflected shot by Kovalchuk.
7:21: Brodeur holds out a one-touch shot by Fedotenko in the slot. Brodeur covers up the rebound despite having Ponikarovsky crash into him.
5:46: Dupuis has a chance in the slot broken up on a nice backcheck by Zubruas.
5:27: Big breatk here for the Penguins as Mottau clips Fedotenko in the face in the slot. Malkin, Crosby, Gonchar, Letang and Guerin take the ice. A goal here is a must for the Penguins
5:20: Letang takes a pass off the left point and blasts a slapper which is off the mark and deflects out of play.
4:38: Malkin snaps off a wrister from the right circle. Brodeur fights it off and swats away the rebound John
4:28: Guerin has a chance in tight with Brodeur out of place but Skoula has him tied up enough to prevent a clean shot. FIre Ray Shero.
3:26: Goligoski chops a slapper from the right point. Brodeur makes the save despite traffic. The rebound is cleared down ice and that kills off the rest of Mottau's penalty.
3:03: Cooke slides a pass from the left circle to Staal in the slot. Staal sweeps the puck on net but Brodeur simply robs him. What a save.
2:43: Kovalchuk taps a apss across the slot to Langenbrunner on the rght wing. Langenbrunner has an open net but Fleury is able to stick his pads and makes a brilliant save. Wow.
1:29: Fleury is pulled for an extra attacker.
1:10: Gonchar is in deep from the right point and strikes a one-timer which deflects wide.
0:49: Fedotenko can't beat Brodeur in deep.
0:02: Crosby chops a slapper down ice from the defensive zone. Brodeur stops it.
0:00: End of game. Devils 3, Penguins 1.
-That's a tough one to take for the Penguins. They were playing with the Devils for the better part of two periods. They were playing by far their best game against the Devils this season. But a few iffy goals and some rotten officiating combined to sink them.
-We hate to put this on Marc-Andre Fleury. He had a few big clutch saves. Like when he stoned Kovalchuk on the penalty shot and the clutch save on Langenbrunner when they were down't 3-1. And you can't blame him for Travis Zajac jabbing his glove. But that second goal can't happen. He can't give up that huge rebound Andy Greene scored on.
-Has anyone seen the Penguins' second line? Evgeni Malkin looks like he's trying to do everything while Alexei Ponikarovsky and Ruslan Fedotenko are doing nothing. Over these past two games, Ponikarovsky and Fedotenko have each gotten in positions to score, but they just haven't been able to finish.
-We're officially wondering what Fedotenko has done as of late to earn a place in the lineup right now. Other than speak Russian that is. Tyler Kennedy has been quiet as of late, but Fedotenko is invisible. His scoring struggles would be tolerable if he were doing things notable like helping get pucks up off the boards or crashing the net, but he's just not doing anything.
-Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz continued to show some chemistry tonight.
-Bill Guerin disappeared after the first period.
-Depsite all their struggles tonight, the Penguins still lost to a really good team. It's not like they blew one to the Oilers. Despite their recent struggles, the Devils are still a very good team.
-So much for Brodeur being washed up.
-We're not sure if he was excited to play his former team or if he's just a better fit in Jacques Lemaire's sysptem, but the great Martin Skoula was pretty good tonight. He never looked that good in a Penguins uniform. Fire Ray Shero.
-He stumbled a bit early on, but Ilya Kovalchuk got a lot better as the game wore on.
-Andy Greene is a very underrated player. He got ice time in all three playing situations (even strength, power play and penalty kill) and he just seemed to know what to do anytime he was on the ice.
-We're not sure if we should just lump up the Penguins' power play struggles to them playing a really good defensive team or what. Either way, they were really ineffective with the man advantage.
-Even if the Devils have their own struggles on the power play, the Penguins can't take 11 penalties.
-The Penguins ended up with a 35-32 lead in shots.
-Kovalchuk led the game with seven shots.
-Malkin, Fedotenko and Bill Guerin led the Penguins with four each.
-Greene led the game with 23:34 of ice time.
-Letang led the Penguins with 23:25.
-The Penguins ended up with a 26-25 edge in faceoffs (51 percent).
-Dean McAmmond was 7 for 8 (88 percent).
-Crosby was 11 for 18 (61 percent).
-Mike Mottau led the game with four blocked shots.
-Brooks Orpik led the Penguins with three.
-Again, we don't put a lot of weight into plus/minus statistics, but Sergei Gonchar was a minus-3. Just saying.
-Fleury's career record against the Devils dropped to 8-14-4. Ick.
-The Penguins have been outscored by the Devils 17-3 this season. Double ick.
