Crosby bettering own standards - 04-22-10

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

Prior to this series, there was a lot of talk about Sidney Crosby's struggles against the Senators, most notably against the blue line duo of Chris Phillips and Anton Volchenkov. After all, Crosby's career regular season points per game total against Ottawa is rather ordinary at 0.76 (13 points in 17 games).

But that's regular season play. Even going back to the 2007 postseason when the Penguins were trumped by a clearly superior Senators team, Crosby's production has been tremendous. This season, his numbers have jumped to another level. Take gander at Crosby's totals broken down by playoff series throughout his career:

Opponent,
Year
Games

Goals-
Assists-
Points
Points-
Per-
Game
Senators, 2010 4 4-7-11 2.75
Senators, 2008 4 2-6-8 2.00
Capitals, 2009 7 8-5-13 1.86
Flyers, 2008 5 2-5-7 1.40
Hurricanes, 2009 4 2-5-7 1.40
Flyers, 2009 6 4-4-8 1.33
Red Wings, 2008 6 2-5-7 1.17
Senators, 2007 5 3-2-5 1.00
Rangers, 2008 5 0-4-4 0.80
Red Wings, 2009 7 1-2-3 0.43

-Don't forget, Crosby's numbers in 2008 were against a really bad Senators team which had no business being in the playoffs. This season, the Senators entered the postseason with better goaltending and more momentum. Granted, injuries have taken their toll on Ottawa's roster, but Crosby is simply chewing them up.

-Overall by opponent, the numbers look like this:

Opponent,
Year
Games
Played
Goals-
Assists-
Points
Points-
Per-
Game
Capitals 7 8-5-13 1.86
Senators 13 9-15-24 1.85
Hurricanes 4 2-5-7 1.40
Flyers 11 6-9-15 1.36
Rangers 5 0-4-4 0.80
Red Wings 13 3-7-10 0.77

-So in short, Crosby dominates the Senators in playoff games. But you knew that already. We just did the math.
