Toilet Humor

Written by Rob Rogers on .

Welcome to my blog! The purpose of my blog is to invite readers to step behind the drawing board and explore what goes into creating an editorial cartoon. In the process, I will attempt to answer the eternal question: Where do you get your ideas? Enjoy the blog and be sure to comment on my daily cartoons!

I have been doing editorial cartoons for a long time now. Over the years, I have developed a pretty good internal editor. But that doesn’t mean I don’t need an external editor. That is why I am grateful for the keen eye and wisdom of Tom Waseleski, the P-G’s editorial page editor. Yesterday, as I was finalizing my idea for today’s cartoon, my nagging internal editor told me to call my external editor. I wanted to clear my idea with him before spending hours on the drawing.

My original sketch (seen here) showed the same title and couple found in the published cartoon, but instead of looking at a toilet, they were looking at a tree with a sign that said, “Bo Obama’s dad peed here!” This refers to the fact that the father of the new White House puppy resides in Ambridge. I thought it was a funny cartoon and I felt the word “peed” was necessary for the gag. Then again, I have been accused of having the sense of humor of a nine-year old. Tom felt it was sophomoric and crass and didn’t like using the word “peed” in the newspaper. I tried to argue for leaving it in but he wasn’t going for it. As we were talking, another idea came to me. “One funny thing dogs do is drink out of the toilet,” I said. “How about that?” He agreed to let me substitute a toilet for the peed upon tree.

In the end, I think the cartoon is funnier with the toilet. What do you think? Do you like the first version better? Was my editor being too sensitive or did he save me from a bad cartoon?
