Republicans and Democrats in Washington are gearing up for some budget fireworks as they draw closer to the deadline to raise the debt ceiling. Here is the crazy part about the GOP's debt ceiling argument (they say they won't raise it without other cuts in place): during the presidency of George W. Bush, where most of the current debt was allowed to accrue, Republicans in Congress voted 19 times to increase the debt limit. During those votes the GOP required no offsetting spending cuts or tax increases in order to raise the debt ceiling. Why are they doing it now? Pure politics.
