Every president has had to deal with appalling disrespect

Written by Susan Mannella on .

This is in response to Irene Wynn's Feb. 12 letter ("The Disrespect Shown Toward This President Is Appalling"): I am writing this as a registered independent. My question to Ms. Wynn is, has she been appalled at the disrespect shown to just about every president before Mr. Obama? Each and every one has had disrespect from the opposing party members. So, in actuality, this is nothing new.

And speaking of disrespect, where was the concern for disrespect when Craig Kilborn posted on "The Late Late Show" a picture of George W. Bush and the words "Snipers Wanted" while Mr. Bush was campaigning for his first term?

While I respect Ms. Wynn's opinion that Messrs. George W. Bush and Richard Nixon were "two of the worst presidents" our country has ever had in her lifetime, I could add someone who has to have been the worst in my lifetime, that being Jimmy Carter. I must ask Ms. Wynn where the hope and change that Mr. Obama promised are. Unemployment is still higher than when he took office and a decent job is not in the picture for many people eagerly wanting to work and not collect an unemployment check.

I will give Mr. Obama credit for the demise of Osama bin Laden but also give the same kudos to our former President George W. Bush, as valuable information regarding bin Laden's whereabouts and activities was obtained through the interrogation techniques used by the Defense Department and armed forces during President Bush's terms in office.

In closing, I'd like to say that the office of the president does deserve the utmost respect. And, yes, Ms. Wynn, it is time to get over this subtle bigotry and vote for a man or woman for president because of his or her intelligence, work ethic, morals, etc., and not just because he or she is black or white.
