Pa. first lady offers ideas for Black History Month

February marks the commemoration of Black History Month, a time when we celebrate the invaluable contributions that the African-American community has made to our nation's culture and history. As Pennsylvania's tourism ambassador or "First Tourist," I was delighted to discover the many places throughout the commonwealth, and especially here in Pittsburgh, where African-American heritage is recognized every day.

 

In the city's vibrant arts district sits the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, named for Pittsburgh native and Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright August Wilson. Complete with a performing arts theater, education center and more, the August Wilson Center works to preserve, present, interpret and celebrate the art, culture and history of African-Americans from Western Pennsylvania. www.augustwilsoncenter.org

Also be sure to visit the Carnegie Museum of Art to see legendary photographer Charles "Teenie" Harris' exhibition documenting the lives of African Americans in the 20th Century (http://web.cmoa.org.).

These suggestions are just a few of the many ways to celebrate our commonwealth's African-American history. As Pennsylvania's First Tourist, I encourage you to take some time this month (or any time of year!) to learn more about the role Pennsylvania's cultural and heritage organizations play in recognizing and preserving the values exemplified by Black History Month.
