Fool's gold
Landowners are signing leases for gas companies and are being paid, handsomely in some cases. "Feelings of importance" and patriotism are fueled as these companies convince you that you are fueling America and lessening our dependence on foreign gas. "Fueling Pittsburgh" appealed to Pittsburgh pride with language describing coal and steel giants now on the verge of yet another energy technology breakthrough. We've even been compared to Saudi Arabia!
We have entered a "global market" and what is being "fueled" are corporate interests, both foreign and domestic. Their objective is profit. Hefty campaign contributions ensure political support. Once they lease enough land, they want the politicians to legislate "pooling" so they can take over the land of those who choose not to sign. Is anyone concerned about their rights being taken away? Morality has been exchanged for a few gold pieces.
Millions of gallons of water, sand and toxic chemicals are introduced to frac these wells. They deplete and contaminate watersheds with chemicals known to cause cancer, neuropathy, asthma, seizures, etc. Toxic fumes vent 24 hours a day, compromising air quality and health. They call this "clean" energy. The scientific community cannot convince some people to choose clean air and drinkable water over money.
"Wise men say, only fools rush in."
